Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU Health) is seeking a Lung Transplant Coordinator for our newly restarted Lung Transplant Program. The candidate will work closely with the medical and surgical directors along with transplant and hospital leadership to develop protocols, educate members of the multidisciplinary team, and evaluate patients for transplantation.

The coordinator is accountable for the coordination of all aspects of care for the transplant patient population. Assesses and plans in collaboration with the patient, caregiver, and multidisciplinary healthcare team to meet needs across the care continuum.

Assesses data reflective of the patient's status and appropriately interprets information relative to the patient's age-specific needs. Provides patient and family education throughout the continuum of care. Provides leadership through activities such as community involvement, committee work, and participation in quality improvement and research.

The ideal candidate:

  • Has previous transplant, pulmonary, or critical care experience (minimum of 3 years),

  • Has outstanding communication skills,

  • Relishes a collaborative, team approach to care,

  • Enjoys an academic environment and the opportunity to participate in education of students as well as research.

  • Is licensed (multi-state) or eligible for multi-state licensure as Virginia is a member of the RN compact,

  • Holds a baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Masters degree preferred,

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:

Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:

Current RN licensure in Virginia AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent

Experience REQUIRED:

Minimum of three (3) years of nursing experience in transplant, critical care or medical-surgical nursing

Two (2) years of progressive leadership experience

Demonstrated clinical expertise for population served with a minimum of one (1) year in specialty area

Experience PREFERRED:

Five (5) years of clinical experience in the transplant field Academic Healthcare experience

Advanced Practice Nursing Role or Clinical Leadership experience

Education/training REQUIRED:

Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from an accredited School of Nursing

Education/training PREFERRED:

Masters Degree in Nursing Certification in Transplantation

Independent action(s) required:

Follows documented physician/licensed independent provider orders, within the boundaries of the Nurse Practice Act and established standards, policies and practice guidelines.

Organizes and plans work with input from the patient/family with specific outcomes and demonstrated use of sound clinical judgment and resources.

All day-to-day operations of the role are handled independently with minimal assistance.

Advice and guidance are sought from the Manager or Director on an as needed situational basis and when there is a major impact on activity outside the unit.

Actions that are taken without prior approval include daily operational functions and leadership of staff.
