The Lumber Inspector/Grader, plays a critical role in assessing the quality and grade of lumber. Inspects and grades milled, rough sawed or dimensional stock lumber in a safe and productive manner.

Examines lumber on table, moving belt, chain conveyor, or in racks for defects such as knots, stains, decay, splits, faulty edges, pitch pockets, wormholes, and defective milling.

Apply grading rules and guidelines to determine the grade of lumber based on visual appearance, size, and characteristics.

Marks lumber to indicate grade and processing instructions.

Tallies pieces of lumber according to grade and board footage.

Scales board footage and records results.

Working safely and using all required Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).

Keeping the work area clean and organized.

Collaborating cooperatively with coworkers in a professional and respectful manner.

Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Experience Required

Previous experience as a lumber inspector or grader preferred, with a strong understanding of lumber grading rules and standards.

Knowledge of lumber species, characteristics, and terminology.

Mindfulness and visual acuity to accurately assess lumber quality and defects.

Communicate effectively with others regarding grading results, quality issues, and recommendations for improvement.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Communicate effectively with others regarding grading results, quality issues, and recommendations for

improvement.

Ability to work overtime as required.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Lumber Grader Certificate.
