The Lucas County Engineer's Office is in search of a Construction Inspector for its Construction Department. This position shall work as part of a professional team, performing highly responsible sub-professional engineering work of considerable difficulty in inspecting major street widening and resurfacing projects, intersection roundabout projects, storm sewer construction and repairs, bridge and culvert repair and replacements, subdivision infrastructure construction, certain water and sanitary sewer construction and repairs, and related work.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

(1) Inspects materials and procedures used in a variety of construction projects to ensure compliance with plans and specifications; conducts inspection of sub-bases, base, grading, concrete, asphalt, curb and gutter forms, subdrain tile, culverts, sidewalks and other related facilities to assist with establishing construction and maintenance priorities and to insure compliance with bond and escrow guarantees; interprets blueprints and specifications and provides instructions to contractors to make necessary corrections and adjustments; records quantities of materials received and used during specified periods; maintains daily log of construction and inspection activities and compares progress reports for use as a basis for partial payments to contractors; prepares sketches of construction installations (as builts) that deviate from blueprints and records such changes for incorporation on master prints; calculates grades, material quantities and equipment hours as required; inspects completed work to ascertain that removed objects, sidewalks, driveways, trees and bushes beyond work limits are replaced and the area is returned to its original condition; inspects work of utility companies performed on public right-of-way to assure repairs/installations are performed safely and the right-of-way is restored to its original condition.

(2) Informs supervisor of contractors who fail to comply with specifications and instructions; mediates disputes and answers complaints and inquiries from the public concerning construction operations; utilizes surveying instruments and equipment as required in the performance of duties; assures safety of pedestrian and vehicular traffic by inspection of traffic control devices in construction zones; performs office work such as drafting, quantity checking, quantity computations, research of records and files to assist with the preparation of design drawings and update construction standards; prepares plans utilizing computer (Auto CAD) and/or by hand drafting from existing topo and cross sections, developing typical sections and summaries; prepares inspection reports and quantity reference sheets.

(3) Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions; attends professional education and training sessions, seminars, and workshops as directed; must demonstrate regular and predictable attendance; maintains required licenses and/or certifications.

Qualifications

Associate's Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or Construction Management preferred; two (2) years of field experience in public utility, sidewalk, waterline, road, storm and sanitary sewer construction work and one (1) year of practical experience in the inspection of those facilities is preferred. Good people skills a must.

A combination of equivalent education and work experience may be considered in the absence of the above stated qualifications. Must have passed the Construction Inspector Test, provided through the Ohio LTAP, or shall pass the Test within the probationary period. Must possess a valid State of Ohio driver's license, and maintain insurability under the County's vehicle insurance policy.

An employee in this position shall be exposed to hot, cold, wet, humid and/or windy weather conditions; possible heavy traffic; and environmental conditions such as fumes, odors, dust, gases, etc.
