The Role: LTC Data Team Leader
The Long Term Care Data department is responsible for managing information required to support actuarial modeling, reserves valuation, experience analysis and inforce management activities. This position will work with global IT professionals and John Hancock actuaries to prioritize projects and deliver accurate data on schedule.
Strategic Planning and Initiatives
Provide support and expertise to actuarial areas, such as researching data quality issues and producing periodic reports and analysis crucial to experience analysis and re-rate activities.
Identify opportunities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of LTC data analysis and processes, including emerging technology around Big Data (e.g. Data Lake, cloud computing)
Write detailed descriptions of data change requests to provide to systems departments and GSD/GFIT teams and answer questions that arise during development cycles
Work with actuaries across IFRS and NAIC Valuation, Modeling, Experience Analysis and Inforce Management departments to understand data change requests and help prioritize the most important and time-sensitive needs of the collective group of partners
Work with LTC administration system and claims system departments to prioritize changes to financial information provided by those systems
Work with Global Solutions Delivery (GSD) and Group Functions IT (GFIT) areas to prioritize tasks and coordinate change management cycles
Work to assess talent of team members and seek growth opportunities for individuals
Provide feedback to staff through regular performance appraisals, informal feedback and coaching
Engage and inspire the team to make the best use of resources and encourage staff to develop technical skills that will significantly improve the quality of actuarial data and efficiency of processes
Education & Experience
At least 7-10 years of experience in the financial services industry
Advanced degree in Statistics, Math, Comp Sci, Engineering, Actuarial Science or other related discipline
Prior people management experience highly desired
Prior knowledge of Long Term Care products / life insurance industry preferred
Skills & Competencies
Strong knowledge of a data querying language such as SQL, Python, R and/or SAS
Strong analytical and problem solving skills
Strong desire to improve processes
Ability to communicate effectively with actuaries and IT professionals
Outstanding organization and time management skills; ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced environment while demonstrating sound judgment
