About the Agency:

The Virginia Department of Military Affairs State Team provides professional and responsive state support functions to the Adjutant General of Virginia, the Virginia National Guard, the Virginia Air Guard, and the Virginia Defense Force in order to ensure their ability to support and defend the United States and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Maneuver Training Center (MTC) Fort Barfoot (formally Pickett) is comprised of 41,000 acres which includes the Garrison Area, Maneuver Training Areas, Range Areas, Blackstone Army Airfield (BAAF) and Natural Forested Areas and is the main training site for the Virginia Army National Guard and also serves as a training site for all other Branches of the Military.

Job Duties:

Responsible for conducting general farming practices as a part of care and maintenance of FT Barfoot's training areas;

Coordinates directly with LRAM and RTLA Coordinators in order to develop a maintenance plan for training areas in the Fort Barfoot training complex;

Performs operator level maintenance on ITAM equipment, such as brush-clearing machinery, tractors and associated implements, bucket loaders, etc.;

Assists with the design of needed training land repairs to include rehabilitation and maintenance projects, and minor construction;

Coordinates with range operators, managers, trainers, etc., in the execution of LRAM projects;

Coordinates with and monitors work of contractors involved in LRAM projects;

Operates farm type and mid-size construction equipment as a part of land maintenance, repair and reconfiguration projects

  • This includes utility tractors with associated implements, loaders, rotary-head grinding machines, etc.;

Performs maintenance on farm type and mid-size construction equipment, or coordinates for maintenance of such equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge and experience in general farming practices such as disking, seeding, soil amendment application, etc.;

Ability to operate and perform operator level maintenance on equipment such as trucks, farm tractors, bucket loaders, brush-clearing machinery, bull dozers, skid steers, etc.;

Ability to work with others in problem solving and developing innovative techniques to accomplish duties as required;

Ability to work in adverse weather conditions;

Knowledge and experience in reading and interpreting a military map and locate specific locations using the military grid coordinate system;

Ability to become licensed in operation of medium to heavy equipment as required;

Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds;

Must have a valid Driver's License.

Additional Considerations

Experience with and knowledge of the Army ITAM (Integrated Training Area Management) and LRAM (Land Rehabilitation and Maintenance) Programs desirable.
