Job Title: LPN Shift Supervisor, PT 0.4 FTE

Successful applicants are required to provide a criminal record check (including Vulnerable Sector Check) to Human Resources within 4 weeks of employment and assume any associated costs as a condition of employment.

Position Scope:

Under the direction of the the Assistant and Director of Disability Support Programs, the LPN Shift Supervisor will ensure consistent delivery of quality care and service to the residents and clients of the Meadows ARC and its satellite services. They are responsible for supervision of programs, activities, staff deployment, building safety and security.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Monitors client’s condition and behavioral expressions, and ensures that significant variations, both positive and negative, are documented and reported.
  • Carries out Physician’s orders and charts appropriately.
  • Provides for safe transfer of clients to hospital when required.
  • Administers medications as ordered in compliance with the Homes for Special Care Act.
  • Maintains accurate, current records and reports.
  • Attends to treatment of injuries as required. Ensures that Incident Reports are promptly
  • submitted to the appropriate Manager.
  • Ensures that shifts are covered in all departments of the ARC, Supervised Apartments and the
  • satellite services in accordance with collective agreements, policy and management direction.
  • Directly supervises Rehabilitative Care workers ensuring that staff is clearly aware of duties and responsibilities on each shift and will provide coaching and teaching to develop competence.
  • Ensures that staff performs duties in a safe and effective manner, with respect for hazards and
  • an awareness of safety regulations such as the Occupational Health and Safety Act, submits incident reports promptly to the appropriate manager
  • Remains fully conversant with the current Collective Agreements and directs staff in accordance with Collective Agreement provisions.
  • Responds to fire and other emergencies in accordance with regulations and procedures.
  • Inspects the ARC premises at appropriate intervals to ensure that housekeeping standards are
  • maintained and maintenance needs are addressed.
  • Monitors the entry and exit of residents and visitors and sets door alarms during prescribed periods.
  • Responds to incoming phone calls after regular Business Office hours.
  • Maintains cleanliness and security of the clinic and medication room.

Judgement and Initiative:

  • Must demonstrate good interpersonal communication skills and judgement with participants, staff, families, and other stakeholders.
  • Must be flexible in dealing with changing or challenging situations, support the needs of participants, presenting an attitude of respect, empathy and understanding.
  • Must be a positive role model, encouraging good morale, demonstrating respect, and providing advocacy as needed.
  • This is a position of trust in which most work is performed under indirect supervision.
  • Personal integrity, initiative and good judgement are required.
  • The ability to cooperate with other staff and work harmoniously as a member of a team is essential.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be physically and emotionally able to fulfill job requirements
  • Pushing a medication cart

    Working Environment:

  • Usual work area is indoors.
  • While working with clients, may, from time to time, be exposed to behaviors such as physical and verbal abuse. Cuts, scrapes, chemical burns, cigarette smoke, or injuries, may result from routine housekeeping tasks. Pets and plants are part of the normal working environment.

    Qualifications:

  • Currently licensed as an LPN in Nova Scotia
  • Successful completion of Pharmacology Course
  • Current certificate in Standard First Aid, including CPR
  • Non-violent Crisis Intervention training
  • Recent related experience preferred.
  • WHMIS
  • Knowledge of Supportive Decision Making and the UN convention of Human Rights

  • Staff are expected to have a sound knowledge of and be able to practice the principles of diversity and inclusion. Empathy with clients, warmth, patience, imagination, teaching ability, creativity, and a positive approach toward community integration, are all important requirements.
  • Must actively participate in in-service education, seminars, workshops, other educational events, and participate in team meetings

Please note this is a SEIU position and salary is per the collective agreement.
