Job DescriptionSCOPE OF POSITION

The LPN provides direct patient care with varying levels of illness and support services to the nursing unit under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. The LPN is expected to practice within the scope of professional standards, and the rules and regulations established by the VA State Board of Nursing.

The LPN demonstrates the ability to deliver care based on patient needs appropriate to age and developmental level. The LPN possesses a working knowledge of nursing principles. The position involves maintaining current clinical knowledge and competency for skills related to the clinical LPN role where assigned.

Decision making is limited by hospital policy and procedures and based on scope of licensed practice. Routine responsibilities include providing bedside care to patient, performing nursing procedures, transporting patients, supplies and equipment, routine housekeeping duties and documentation of care and procedures performed. Accurately reports and documents in the Electronic Medical Record and electronic documentation systems that support the LPN's clinical and team member role.

The LPN serves as a professional role model as a caregiver and resource for students, peers and other providers on the health care team. Must be able to wear a respirator mask and other personal protective apparel as indicated in the provision of patient care.

Med Surg Peds LPN

  • The Med Surg Peds LPN will demonstrate the above functions listed in the introductory paragraph. The care provided to each patient is specific to the patient's particular physical, age-specific and psychosocial needs.

    The patient population served by this position includes infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric. Obtains and maintains certification in BLS. ACLS preferred.

    PALS within 6 months of hire date, unless class availability dictates a longer time period. This position will demonstrate competency in the care of the pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient populations. De-escalation training within 6 months of hire date, unless class availability dictates a longer time period.

Surgical Services LPN

  • The Surgical Services LPN will demonstrate the above functions listed in the introductory paragraph. Provides safe and effective patient care.

    Functions in an organized manner and demonstrates good professional qualities. Must be flexible in duties and willing to work as an integral part of the surgical team. He/she must be willing to cross train to other specialties within the Operating Room, i.e. central sterile technician to ensure proper decontamination and storage of surgical and endoscopic equipment.

    Gathers all surgical equipment for procedures and ensures it is in working order. Responsible for set up of the sterile field with proper instruments, equipment and medications for procedures and assists surgeon with draping the sterile field, as well as assists with gowning & gloving. Passes instruments and supplies to the surgeon; prepares sterile dressings, holds instruments or retractors during procedures and participates in surgical count and processes specimens and discarded tissue.

    Cleans all instruments for sterilization. Certification in BLS. This position will demonstrate competency in the care of patients of neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric.patient populations.

Inpatient Geropsych

  • The Inpatient Geropsych LPN will demonstrate the above functions listed in the introductory paragraph. Provides direct and indirect patient care services that meet the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of patient care.

    Meets the communication needs of patient and family. Knowledgeable of a wide range of disorders; cognitive, emotional, developmental, social and behavioral. provides care that reflects initiative and responsibility indicative of professional expectations, under the supervision of a registered nurse. Performs crisis intervention.

    Participates in the unit's performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities. Supervised by the Behavioral Health Nurse Manager. Patient population to be served:

    Adult to Geriatric. 6 months to 1 year experience in a psychiatric setting preferred. Obtains and maintains certification in BLS. De-escalation training will be provided during orientation or within 6 months of hire date, unless class availability dictates a longer time period.

    Basic computer knowledge. Excellent interpersonal skills.

Inpatient Rehab

  • The inpatient rehabilitation LPN will demonstrate the above functions listed in the introductory paragraph. Is a member of the interdisciplinary rehabilitation team who is responsible for carryover of the established team goals to achieve patients' highest level of function.

    The care provided to each patient is specific to the patient's particular diagnosis, physical, age-specific and psychosocial needs and ensures quality and appropriateness throughout the continuum of care for adult and geriatric patient populations. The inpatient rehabilitation LPN communicates and consults with appropriate resource people when needs are identified. Provides education to patient and family/significant other/caregiver.

    Promotes quality of life to patients with disabilities. Provides comfort and therapy to patients and families. Promotes health conducive adjustments for the patient, family, and community. Obtains and maintains certification in BLS.

Family Birth Center

  • The FBC LPN will demonstrate the above functions listed in the introductory paragraph. The care provided to each patient is specific to the patient's particular physical, age-specific and psychosocial needs.

    Obtains and maintains certification in BLS and NRP. This position will demonstrate competency in the care of the Neonate, Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric patient populations. Provides safe and effective patient care.

    Functions in an organized manner and demonstrates professional qualities. Works under the direct supervision of an RN when doing newborn and maternal assessments. Cross-trained to nursery, antepartum, GYN, post-partum and surgery.

    Functions as a scrub tech or nursery nurse in surgery. Works as a central sterile technician to ensure proper decontamination and storage of surgical equipment. De-escalation training within 6 months of hire date, unless class availability dictates a longer time period.

Emergency Department, LPN - Emergency Department

  • The ED LPN will demonstrate the above functions. BLS required.

    Will obtain ACLS and PALS within 6 months of hire date, unless class availability dictates a longer time period. In addition, completion of the dysrhythmia course as well as the cardiovascular drips course is preferred. The care provided to each patient is specific to the patient's particular physical, age-specific and psychosocial needs.

    The patient population served by this position includes neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric. De-escalation training within 6 months of hire date, unless class availability dictates a longer time period.

Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
