Responsibilities

The Journeyman Electrician exists to ensure that the systems required for the safe operation of aircraft and the safety of passengers are operational and performing according to specifications and regulations. Assists the master electrician with the backup generators and transfer switches for these systems.

  • Monitor daily work orders and perform airfield light repairs.

  • Perform general maintenance, emergency repairs, replacement, relocation and refurbishment of all airport building and grounds electrical systems.

  • Install changes to existing circuits or new circuits required for the operation of the airport based on airport, tenant and public needs.

  • Requires mechanical checks of the engine, monitoring the automatic transfer switches, and monitoring the operation of the generator equipment.

  • Perform basic mechanical checks of the generators and notify the airport equipment mechanic of any discrepancies for repairs.

  • Weekly operation of the generators without loads to ensure that they are running properly.

  • Collection and interpretation of the data from the generator runs and tests to determine if the generators are running per specification and that the loads are transferring properly.

  • Assist the master electrician with the electrical feed transfers when the automatic systems are inoperable and maintenance is required on one of the two main power feed circuits to the terminal.

  • Replace electrical components that are inoperative, reset tripped electrical systems, and adjust photocells and times connected to various light circuits.

  • Work with other sections (i.e. jet bridge mechanic, equipment mechanic, building technicians) to repair and replace electrical components of the building systems.

  • Communicate with component manufacturers to trouble shoot existing systems.

  • Remain current with FAA Advisory Circulars on the certification, installation and operations of airfield lighting circuits and components.

  • May be asked to perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Four (4) years of related experience (8,000 hours of on-the-job training required by Texas Code)

  • State of Texas Journeyman Electrician license required

  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) 100

  • Airport identification issued after a fingerprint based criminal history record check

  • Must be able to read and understand lighting and ballast schematics to effect onsite repairs, understand motor control circuitry and photocell contractors. Must be able to read and understand construction plans as-built plans.

  • Must have knowledge and understanding on the main power supplies to the airport. These include 7,400 and 12,470 volt supplies, transformers and switch gear.

  • A driver's license is required

  • Successful out of state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire

Basis of Rating

Application review and the City may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
