Position Description:

Delano Elementary School is looking for a highly qualified candidate for a long-term substitute position as a Special Education teacher. The position would include teaching reading, math and social skills to students in our special ed program. The assignment would start on approximately Sept. 30, 2024 and end on December 20, 2024, these dates may vary slightly. Successful candidates will demonstrate a consistent focus on reflective growth, collaborative skills, and a dedication to student achievement. The candidate must have strong classroom management skills and maintain good communication with parents and staff.

Essential Duties:

• Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide effective teaching strategies while adhering to the district philosophy and vision.

• Provide explicit instruction in the areas of math, reading, writing, social / emotional and behavioral skills.

• Create a classroom environment that responds to the needs of individual learners.

• Ability to create functional spaces for students that are welcoming yet highly structured and fit the needs of the student/s you are serving.

• Develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and clearly communicate expectations.

• Utilize proactive behavior management techniques.

• Reinforce positive behaviors, utilize de-escalation techniques, and redirect inappropriate behaviors.

• Uses flexible thinking and adapt to student needs

• Provide instructional direction to paraprofessional support staff including creating and assigning activities, instructional oversight and providing general guidance.

• Communicate with parents in a timely manner. Maintain positive and constructive communication with students, staff, parents, and community.

• Work collaboratively with parents and other staff members to reinforce the educational program and advocate for each student.

• Thorough knowledge of special education laws, rules and regulations.

• Good oral, written and interpersonal communication.

• Ability to adhere to due process timelines and complete individualized education plan and evaluation paperwork to guide educational programming

Physical Requirements:

• May require exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, standing, speaking, hearing, sitting, walking, lifting and repetitive motions.

• Rarely requires exertion of up to 50 pounds of force, stopping, kneeling, running, crawling and crouching.

Licensure Requirements:

• K-12, K-6, special education license required; SLD or ABS required; ASD or EBD preferred as well.
