Aspen High School seeks a Long Term Substitute Teacher in Social Studies for the First Semester of the 2024-2025 School Year (August - January).

Position Title: AHS Social Studies Teacher

Department: Aspen High School

Reports to: Principal

Classification: Certified Full-time Exempt

FTE Status: Full-Time, 1.0 FTE, 40 hours per week

Contract Period: Temporary for First Semester

Compensation: $270/Day

Benefits: In addition to a competitive salary, ASD offers to long-term substitutes, CO PERA (pension plan) enrollment with district contribution, TSA options, and free transportation for employees from Carbondale to Aspen. Licensed hires will be paid at the District long term substitute rate of $270 per day. Screening of applications will begin as soon as they are received and will continue until the temporary vacancy is filled.

Job Summary: This teacher is responsible for instructing students through a theme-based approach with an emphasis on essential skill building. The candidate should be able to deliver instruction on themes such as government, expansion, social movements, economic shifts, conflict and war, and globalization within each content area while helping students to understand their rights, privileges,and responsibilities as a citizen. Providing international and comparative perspectives, the successful candidate helps students develop source analysis and research skills and the means to identify, assess, and thoughtfully evaluate diverse interpretations-past and present.

Supervisor: Principal of Aspen High School.

Requirements: Candidates must:

  • Valid and up to date Substitute Teaching Authorization through Colorado Department of Education OR be a certified teacher.

  • Demonstrate expertise in teaching World History, US History, Civics, and Geography using the Colorado State Standards for Social Studies and Aspen High School curriculum

  • Demonstrate expertise in instruction, including knowledge of the ways in which learning takes place and the appropriate levels of cognitive, social, and emotional development of the adolescent;

  • Establish a respectful environment of a diverse population of students, developing a classroom environment in which each student has the opportunity to think independently and express original ideas;

  • Facilitate learning for all students using a variety of instructional methods, integrating and utilizing technology, to provide students with opportunities to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills, encourage exploration of ideas, and develop leadership qualities;

  • Take responsibility for student academic growth using a variety of strategies to inform instructional decisions;

  • Reflect on teaching practices, analyzing student learning, development, and growth and apply what is learned to improve instruction;

  • Possess the ability to communicate and interact effectively and productively, both verbally and in writing, with all staff;

  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for collaboration, using MTSS framework, with a team of administrators, teachers, and support staff;

  • Demonstrate ability to work with cross-departmental and or grade level teams to develop goals for improving student achievement;

  • Demonstrate teacher leadership, advocating for students and exhibiting high ethical standards;

  • Have a strong desire to extend learning experiences beyond the classroom, including participation in high school experiential education.

  • Demonstrated background and working knowledge of Google Classroom and Powerschool.

  • Maintains high ethical standards, legal responsibility, and confidentiality.

Working Environment:

The job is performed in a generally clean and comfortable environment. The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands:

  • some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling,some stooping, kneeling

  • Considerable sitting, standing, walking, and repetitive motion with computer use.
