This position will support all North America transportation activities for business line Baby Care to provide a high level of service at the lowest possible cost for Evonik and our customers. Baby Care is a high-volume, continuous production manufacturer of superabsorbent polymers, with two manufacturing sites in North America:

Greensboro, NC and Garyville, LA. The incumbent will work closely with multiple departments, across business lines, and in collaboration with central procurement to find creative solutions that increase value to, provide information for decision making, and ensure compliance for all transportation activities.


Support all activities pertaining to transportation to/from/within the Baby Care NA facilities, both domestic and international. Plan and procure transportation needs in collaboration with sales, supply chain, and corporate logistics.

Collaborate with raw material procurement for inbound freights for determination of vendor freight terms (Prepaid/Collect). Oversee the freight purchase-to-pay process between the business, vendors, and accounts payable to support timely and accurate freight payments between AP and Inbound/Outbound coordinators. Work closely with customer service and supply chain personnel to ensure proper carrier selection and scheduling.

Support all railroad activities for the business line, both inbound and outbound, and for both raw materials and finished goods. Maintain and report historical car movements, lease and transit costs, storage, asset utilization, payload optimization, transit statistics (dwell, transit, cycle times). Provide data to support planning lead times and long-term fleet requirements.

Collaborate with supply chain planning and vendors to optimize payload. Monitor for exceptions or diversions to keep cars moving efficiently, expediting shop trips as they occur. Plan for and ensure regulatory inspections are completed on time and without impact to supply.

Monitor and report transportation activities and costs. Define and maintain relevant logistics KPI's and provide regular reporting on actuals versus plan (OTIF, On time pickups/deliveries, lead/transit times). Participate in meetings with customers and vendors to have aligned methodology supporting continuous improvement.

Maintain all freight routes, rates, vendors in SAP TMS to ensure all transportation costs are correctly accrued and settled in SAP. Maintain freight cost information in the ECLIPSE tool. Reconcile freight cost plan/actual for settlement with customers with delivered shipment terms.

Provide guidance to customer service and logistics regarding awarded carriers and quota arrangements. Support duty drawback claims related to Evonik's imports and exports, directly and in collaboration with Corp Logistics.

Provide support to supply chain for projects involving new loading, warehousing, or distribution facilities. Propose and implement measures to reduce transportation costs, demurrage/detention, manage complexity, and administrative effort.

Assist with integration of cutting edge technologies; implement and support electronic interfaces to carriers, customers and vendors. Evaluate carrier performance and lead projects to improve service level and reduce costs for Evonik and our customers. Facilitate continuous improvement, complaints management, root cause investigations and corrective actions.

Maintain procedures pertaining to transportation planning and execution; ensure compliance with Evonik's quality management system for all transportation activities. Support compliance with domestic and international transportation regulations. Manage processes between Evonik and 3PL vendors for all transportation.


  • Bachelor's Degree or compensating experience

  • Must have a minimum of 5 years operational experience in logistics, transportation and distribution, preferably in an industrial manufacturing environment.

  • Must have sound knowledge environmental, safety, and health regulations pertaining to domestic, import, export, and railroad transportation. Must have strong interpersonal skills and ability to work and communicate effectively with personnel from varied and diverse backgrounds.

  • Must be able to build data and perform statistical evaluations in Microsoft Excel. Experience with transportation management programs (e.g. SAP TM); certification in Logistics, Transportation and Distribution a strong plus!

  • Must be skilled using a variety of software products including: Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Access and Visio, Lotus Notes, various traffic software programs, etc.

    Expertise using SAP inventory and warehouse management modules required. Experience in SAP materials maintenance and sales and distribution modules also helpful.
