Under the direction of the Building Trades Supervisor, the Locksmith II role entails installing, repairing, and maintaining various types of locks and security systems and other door-related hardware, in and outside of all campus buildings that do not require a specialized technician or supervision. The Locksmith II will also respond to emergency lockout situations and implement security solutions tailored to the unique needs of the University.

Must have through knowledge of electronic key systems/programs, and installation of locks and door-related hardware. Must have thorough knowledge of industry regulations, building codes, and security standards relevant to commercial locksmith services. Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations in the execution of locksmith duties. Maintain accurate records of all locksmith activities, including service requests, installations, repairs, and inventory management. Complete work order logs and documentation in a timely manner. Collaborate effectively with other staff members, as well as with contractors, department managers, and security personnel, to deliver comprehensive security solutions.

This position is a Local 615, 32BJ Service Employees International Union (SEIU) position.

Job Description:

Main Functions

  • Install, repair and maintain locks and other related door hardware for all University facilities.

  • Identify keys and assist in maintenance of records for codes and combinations.

  • Cut, duplicate, and program keys, including master key systems and restricted key systems, and ensure control of distribution.

  • Maintain accurate records of key issuance and keyholder access.

  • Respond promptly to emergency lockout situations outside normal work schedule for students, faculty and staff, such as lockouts, key problems and lock malfunctions. Provide efficient and effective solutions to restore access and security.

  • Must be knowledgeable in electronic key systems to be able to upload information and run reports as needed.

  • Collaborate with contractors ensuring that work or installation of door security devices by contractors comply with University standards.

  • Work from blueprints, drawings, sketches and/or verbal instructions to plan, layout and install equipment.

  • Report any issues to the appropriate manager.

  • Collaborate with contractors and University Staff in planning, purchasing or repairing, door security hardware and equipment.

  • Perform other similar and related tasks as required.

  • Must be able to work from ladders, bucket trucks, scaffolds, and pits.

  • Provides appropriate support during events, annual electrical shutdown, opening of school and commencement.

General Functions

  • Follow proper safety procedures and observe all safety rules and regulations including OSHA

  • Reports building damage, malfunctioning equipment, needed maintenance and /or repairs in assigned work areas.

  • Read, write, understand, and carry out oral and written instructions in English. Keeps logs and writes shift reports.

  • Assess and update all work order assignments using the department's computerized work order management system. This includes keeping records, writing reports, and identifying/requesting materials, and recording time in a timely manner.

  • Participates in training to keep and acquire knowledge, skills, and abilities in order to remain current with standard operational practices and revised standards

  • Establish and maintain a positive cooperative working relationship with supervisors, fellow workers, department heads, and other members of the campus community.

  • Must be able to work alone with minimal supervision

  • Work in an environment subject to frequent changing of priorities and time deadlines.

  • Drive a University Vehicle

Position Requirements:

  • 3 years of experience as an accredited locksmith required

  • Must have a good working knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC systems, and basic carpentry in order to address minor repairs and adjustments on their own.

  • Must be able to use hand and power tools.

  • Must have the ability to follow instructions from supervisors or senior managers.

  • Valid and current Massachusetts Driver's License Required.OSHA 10 training is preferred.

Physical/Environmental Demands

  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking.

  • Work will be performed in and outside during all New England seasons.

  • Must be physically able to climb ladders, bend, or crawl into awkward spaces.

  • Must be physically able to work from ladders, bucks' trucks, scaffolds, and pits.

  • Manually lift up to 60 pounds. Heavier material or equipment is lifted using other methods.

  • Work inside and outside all campus buildings and grounds; including on rooftops, in vaults, and outside throughout campus property

  • Work will be performed in and outside during all New England seasons.
