Job Description:

Contribute to the production team to ensure goals are met safely and efficiently while conforming to company policies. Process vehicles in a safe manner to produce core & scrap products, enable the customers to pull parts, and satisfy environmental requirements. This position focuses primarily on Front Loader operation and various material handling duties.

Essential Functions:

  • Operation of a Front Loader, Crusher, Fork Lift or Skid Steer: Move vehicles, cores, scrap, and other material safely through the yard. Ensure that loads are positioned and placed securely. Use various tool attachments to segregate and dismantle light passenger vehicles.

  • Maintenance of a Front Loader, Crusher, Fork Lift or Skid Steer: Perform the pre-operations check and other inspections/cleaning as prescribed in the Certification course.

This job may also include any combination of the following duties:

  • Degarbage: Remove Freon, power steering fluid, power brake fluid, batteries, excess garbage, and other items as prescribed by procedure.

  • Drain: Remove gasoline, coolant, waste oil, transfer case oil, catalytic converters, and other items as prescribed by procedure.

  • Set & Pull: Place vehicles on wheel stands so customers can safely access sellable parts. Remove vehicles and clean up the surrounding area in preparation for the next vehicle set. Other duties as prescribed by procedure.

  • Field Decore: Loosen the motor and transmission mounts. Remove any remaining tires and selected core items as prescribed by procedure.

  • Ground Decore: Remove heater cores, copper wire, and other items as prescribed by procedure. Maintain the crush pad work area to reduce equipment downtime, harvest cores, and ensure environmental compliance.

  • Table Decore: Dismantle engines and transmissions. Remove selected small cores, harvest wire, sort commodity materials, and other duties as prescribed by procedure.

  • Tire Dismantling: Use the tire machine to separate rubber tires and wheels. Remove weights and stems. Sort tires and prepare rims for shipment.

  • Janitor: Collect and harvest core dismantled core materials. Remove debris. Identify & address safety risks in the customer area. Other duties as prescribed by procedure.

  • Miscellaneous: Assist customers as needed in a courteous manner. Prepare Gaylord boxes and pallets for shipment. Review and complete logs for regulatory and tracking purposes. Maintain and replace storm water control devices. Assist in the review and maintenance of mechanical equipment.

Required Skills

Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions:

  • Standing, walking, bending, climbing and stretching are required outside in the weather for extended periods during the shift.

  • The ability to sit for 6-8 hours per day in 2-3 hour intervals.

  • Manual dexterity to handle tools and the ability to move 50 pounds are regularly required to perform routine functions.

  • Good hand-eye coordination and motor skills sufficient to safely operate fork lift equipment in an active work area.

  • Regular and peripheral vision sufficient to safely operate fork lift equipment in an active work area and perform job functions as described above.

  • Hearing must be sufficient to safely operate fork lift equipment in an active work area.

Job Conditions:

  • Exposure on a regular basis to outdoor weather conditions.

  • Periodic exposure to minimal chemical hazards.

Required Experience

Necessary Qualifications:

  • Ability to wear and maintain all prescribed PPE and follow basic safety practices.

  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions including comprehension of basic safety messages and labels (waste oil, gasoline, flammable, etc.).

  • Ability to complete basic safety, environmental, and code of conduct training.

  • Able to work required hours which may include weekend and holidays.

  • Ability to work efficiently in extreme weather conditions rain, snow, hot sun, cold for a full shift.

  • Willingness and ability to obtain and maintain a valid PNP Certification for operation of a Front Loader and a Forklift.

  • Ability to drive a manual transmission.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience operating heavy equipment.

  • Experience in automotive repair or dismantling.

  • Experience with automotive parts and/or retail customers

  • Experience with tools and machinery.

  • Bilingual in English & Spanish.

Essential Functions Essential Functions When Assigned to Operate Tractor Trailer Truck: 1. Operates a large Front End Loader Truck, or other heavy equipment to transport containers to landfill for disposal. 2. Operates a trailer-truck combination equipment, other large dump trucks or heavy equipment to transport large quantities of brush, tree limbs, and other solid refuse collected from streets and alleys to ensure safe and clean residential and business areas free from garbage or debris. 3. Performs daily pre-trip equipment inspection, fueling unit, and preventive maintenance service by checking screens, oil, filters, tires, etc. to ensure optimum operation and performance of vehicle. 4. Maintains vehicle clean by washing, brushing, and cleaning the truck's interior to ensure a clean and professional image and safe and sanitary conditions. 5. Maintains activity logs and mileage and maintenance records by documenting odometer readings before and after driving vehicle to provide accountability of vehicle's usage. Essential Functions When Assigned to Operate Sanitation Truck: 1. Drives a garbage pickup truck (either the regular or the automated) to gather garbage from residential and commercial areas of the city. 2. Picks up, carries and dumps garbage into the truck when not driving to perform garbage pickup function. 3. Carries pack-out and makes handicap stops to pick up garbage from the homes of residents who are handicapped. 4. Maintains records on miles driven and bags used to maintain information for administrative purposes. Notifies supervisor of problems encountered on streets and alleyways to resolve garbage pickup problems. 5. Performs minor maintenance duties on garbage pickup trucks such as gassing and checking oil to ensure the operational readiness of vehicles. 6. Performs alley-trimming duties as needed, by cutting or trimming trees and bushes to ensure the safety of alleys for the operation of garbage trucks. 7. Loads truck with tools and equipment necessary to accomplish the garbage pickup function. Performs Depending on Location: 1. Acts as the spotter at McCommas Landfill directing haulers to specific areas for dumping the contents of their trucks to ensure efficiency of Landfill operations. 2. Performs minor maintenance duties on garbage pickup trucks such as gassing and checking oil to ensure the operational readiness of vehicles. 3. Hand loads small piles of brush on to front-end loader to assist the brush pick up crew. 4. Operates roto-boom or front-end loader to pick up brush in the absence of rotor boom operator. 5. Maintains records on miles driven and bags used to maintain information for administrative purposes. 6. Trims bushes and trees on alleyways, and repairs ruts and holes to maintain them safe for the public and sanitation trucks. 7. Operates a winch, dump truck or rear-end loader or a low-bed truck when collecting recycling materials such as glass and aluminum to efficiently collect such items under City's Recycling Program. Working Conditions & Hazards: * Exposed to all weather conditions and traffic hazards. * Subject to fumes, foul odors, dust, toxic waste, and disease causing materials when transporting solid waste. * Subject to injury when driving on slippery sloping, or uneven terrain. * Requires bending, pulling and pushing when shredding solid waste material or collecting brush and tree limbs.
