18.4% of people in Wyandotte County are living below the Federal poverty level, as are "only" 5.3% in Johnson County. In just one year, however, participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program increased 18% statewide with a 73% increase in Johnson County and a more than 39% increase in Wyandotte County, with participation in other safety-net programs showing a significant increase as well.
The rise in number of people accessing services reveals there is real need in both Wyandotte and Johnson Counties. This need is seen throughout all facets of life, demonstrated by the significant number of individuals seeking help to navigate the minefield of potholes and pitfalls that comprise living in poverty. Made Men seeks to empower individuals and communities to succeed through education, training and connections to sustainable resources.
Made Men is a sub-site of the Literacy KC VISTA Program. The Literacy KC VISTA Program seeks to address illiteracy through a concentration on traditional literacy as well as health literacy, financial literacy, and digital literacy. The VISTA members and organizations that participate in the Literacy KC VISTA Program take a holistic, collaborative approach to literacy, building the organizations' capacity to serve their clients, and addressing poverty in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
