Responsibilities

This Linux systems engineering position is responsible for the architecture of the high performance computing infrastructure. Job activities include designing, implementing, and maintaining tools and techniques that permit the automated configuration, administration, and maintenance of large numbers of multi-user high performance computer systems and software. The Linux systems engineer actively participates in the development and implementation of long-term strategies directly related to high performance computing infrastructure and architectures.

Key Functions:

  • Deep understanding of various Linux/Unix operating system internals with proven hands-on operational experience including kernel/system optimization and tuning of log collection mechanisms

  • Make informed decisions directly related to creating new deployment and administration best practices to architect new practice management methodologies for Linux based infrastructures and configuration consistency across multiple environments

  • Evaluates, selects, and applies a wide variety of off-the-shelf and open source technologies to orchestrate the provisioning of bare metal and virtual systems, software installations, operating system and third party application upgrades and patching, as well as the management of various technical computing software stacks

  • Utilizes existing and new tools and techniques for automated tracking and optimization of IT resources

  • Coordinates with support teams including network, security, application, customer, and relevant third party vendor teams regarding server, storage, and technical application architecture and deployment methods

  • Develop strategies and roadmaps in collaboration

Qualifications

REQUIRED

  • 5 or more years or relevant experience (Linux) with Bachelor's Degree or 3 or more years of relevant experience with Master's Degree

  • Experience with current and state-of the-art computer technologies and experience building large scale Linux based infrastructures.

  • Expertise in supporting, configuring, maintaining, and monitoring Linux and Unix operating systems, hardware, applications across multiple technology stacks

  • Experience with IT automation and configuration management technologies such as Puppet, Razor, PXE, Ansible, or Chef

PREFERRED

  • 6 or more years of relevant experience with Bachelor's Degree, 4 or more years of relevant experience with Master's Degree, or PhD or JD

  • Excellent influencing skills

  • Must work well in a team environment

  • Must be detail oriented

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and projects

  • Must possess strong organizational skills

  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and projects at one time

  • Effective interpersonal skills to coordinate efforts and work with other internal and external organizations

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Customer service orientation

  • Ability to work under minimal supervision, to self-initiate activities, and to work within timelines

  • Must possess time management and project management skills

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENTS

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to use a computer to complete activities.

  • Ability to communicate with individuals and groups in person, by phone and telepresence.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will typically work in an office environment.

Responsibilities The Embedded and Specialized Computing Department is seeking applicants interested in building leading edge software products and systems. Members of this group provide design and implementation support to a wide range of customers including internal Aerospace customers, national stakeholders, and global commercial customers. Key Functions * We are looking for a software engineer with a blended skillset: digital hardware familiarity, firmware, code on Linux and other platforms, e.g., Android, cloud. Familiarity with UI/UX technologies and web technologies. * We rapidly move ideas from basic concept to brass board demonstration in relevant environments using a variety of technologies and are always looking for quality minds. * We value curiosity and the internal drive to learn. * Previous projects within this group have included CubeSat spacecraft development, autonomous vehicle sensor networks, ground and on-orbit modems leveraging FPGAs, GPU-accelerated signal processing, and sensor fusion among others. Qualifications Required * Bachelor or Master of Science in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics or another related discipline. * Professional experience in a related technical industry after obtaining a Bachelor's degree. * Proficient in C programming. Working knowledge with one or more of: Python, C++, JavaScript, Java. * Deep experience with the Linux platform as both user and developer: tools, application development workflow, system programming. * Familiarity with laboratory tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supplies, and multimeters. * Ability to complete complex tasking with little to no supervision. * High aptitude for leadership and ability to mentor more junior engineers. * Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. * Ability to obtain a security clearance issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance. Preferred * 8 or more years of professional experience in embedded engineering and development * Understanding of real-time, embedded, size and power constrained systems. Linux system bring-up a plus, e.g., U-Boot and Linux customization on Xilinx Zynq FPGA boards. * FPGA development and HDL (Verilog, VHDL) experience. * Working knowledge of firmware development (baremetal or RTOS) on Arm Cortex-M/R/A microcontrollers or SoCs. * Working knowledge of typical hardware interfaces: I2C, SPI, GPIO, UART, etc. Working knowledge of typical subsystems (e.g., eMMC, raw NAND, etc.) and associated system level software integration. * Working knowledge of typical networking stack and architectural principles: Ethernet, TCP/IP suite, HTTP, web services, e.g., REST. * General, background familiarity with web technologies: databases, SQL, front-end frameworks, e.g., Angular/React/Ember/Backbone/Bootstrap. * Familiarity with distributed (edge) computing. * Working knowledge of ROS is a plus.
