Information Technology and Computing Services (ITCS) is the central agency that supports enterprise-wide computing at East Carolina University. ITCS, through innovative information technology initiatives and service, provides opportunities for the ECU community to excel in teaching, research, and service using state-of-the-market technology and collaborative environments. ITCS is first and foremost committed to providing excellent information technology support for faculty, staff, and students. ITCS partners with campus departments, other universities, and industry to make strategic investments in information technology infrastructure that will help maintain a competitive advantage in administrative applications, faculty research, and outreach to the state and nation. We will achieve this through increasing the core functions and deploying appropriate technology throughout the university.

The primary mission of the Enterprise Systems Linux team is to ensure secure, highly available and robust computing platforms to power the University's mission critical Enterprise Linux Systems. The team installs, configures, manages, and supports Enterprise Linux systems and platform technologies on various server hardware including blade servers, virtual servers, and rack mount servers.

Job Duties

  • Install, configure, and support system software, server hardware and firmware updates.

  • Monitor system logs to identify and resolve system anomalies, errors, service failures, etc.

  • Monitor and manage system security. Follow security best practices to secure systems. Routinely review vulnerability scan reports, research vulnerabilities, install patches or take other remediation actions in a timely manner. Document exceptions per ITCS vulnerability management processes.

  • Monitor system performance including CPU, Memory, and disk space utilization to ensure resources are within operating parameters. Coordinate and/or upgrade system resources.

  • Manage system level users and groups.

  • Configure and monitor system backups, resolving failures when needed.

  • Monitor account usage and follow up on access violations.

  • Follow change management process for testing, applying, documenting, and coordinating changes.

  • Maintain appropriate documentation for supported systems to assist team members with on-call support.

  • Function in a low-to-mid level technical resource capacity.

  • Monitor team support queues and work issue tickets.

  • Effectively use available tools in problem solving and systems analysis.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve routine, non-routine issues.

  • Resolve routine operational problems in a timely manner.

  • Document support issues and resolutions.

  • As needed escalate complex support issues, to more senior team members for resolution and where appropriate, open support tickets with vendor support and coordinate resolution.

  • Negotiate time and priorities with vendors for escalated issues to achieve problem resolution.

  • Work closely with application administrators or departmental contacts for the overall support of the system. Identify proactive measures that can be implemented to minimize future issues.

  • As part of an on-call rotation, provide after-hours technical support. Thoroughly document support issues and resolution actions.

  • Continuously works to develop troubleshooting skills.

  • Demonstrate general technical understanding in supporting team technologies and operating systems.

  • Demonstrate the ability to think independently, research, interpret and apply technical knowledge to bring new ideas into focus when evaluating software and hardware.

  • Perform basic troubleshooting of system issues.

  • Implement routine system level changes and some non-routine changes with assistance.

  • Develop basic scripts or modify simple scripts for I.T. task automation.

  • Understands software installation concepts and testing requirements.

  • Proactively seeks to develop technical understanding with supported operating systems and platform technologies.

  • Engage the broader teams for collective collaboration on issues, resolutions and knowledge transfer.

  • Work with the customer and the team to understand issues and needs.

  • Works with senior staff to assess available technologies and recommends solutions to customers.

  • Implement new solutions, processes, or ideas to meet customers' needs.

  • Engages hardware and software vendors to understand their product offerings.

  • Perform research to bring new ideas into focus when evaluating software and hardware.

  • Assists or implements system level automation in building, configuring and/or maintaining systems to deliver efficiencies and configuration standardization.

  • Participate in team development initiatives.

  • Develop solutions for automating repetitive tasks.

  • Assist with Disaster Recovery (DR) preparedness for areas of responsibility. DR duties include maintaining appropriate DR documentation and performing recovery testing to ensure overall preparedness and accuracy of recovery plans.

  • Serves as a productive team member on project teams.

  • Maintain accurate project documentation. Receive specific goals and tasks and ensure project priorities are met.

  • Maintain accurate project documentation, timelines, and project priorities.

  • Provide routine status updates to project manager.

  • Notify supervision immediately of issues that may negatively impact the project or your ability to complete the tasks.

  • May function as a project leader for small or simple projects. Work with supervision or senior team members to organize, manage and drive the project. Develop understanding of ITCS project methodologies and apply those in your approach.

  • Develop a good understanding of the industry and how that may impact customers.

  • Works closely with customers to understand their needs and requirements.

  • Consults with customers on a range of issues.

  • Relays information to clients regarding the resolution plans for their problems.

  • Builds on-going partnerships with clients. The position will interpret technical information and convey that to customers.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills will be needed in this position. Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with employees at all organizational levels across the organization.

Other duties as directed

This position may be eligible for Flexible Work Arrangements (FWA) under the ECU FWA Policy.

The standard work schedule for this position will need to be adjusted to meet the position requirements, which include and are not limited to evening and weekend hours to perform scheduled and unscheduled workload requirements to maintain University operations.

Minimum Education/Experience

Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux or other Linux variants

  • General programming experience, shell scripting, python, etc.

  • Ansible playbooks, Puppet modules, Kickstart templates, cloud images

  • Cloud technologies such as Azure, AWS, GCE, OpenStack, etc.

  • Data Center virtualization, VMWare, LibVirt, Docker, etc.

  • Ability to provide technical support as part of an on-call rotation during non-business hours.

  • Ability to be proactive and team oriented
