Job Description:

Successful candidate must live within 30 minutes reporting time of the Appalachian Power Company, Roanoke Service Center located at 802 River Ave Roanoke, VA 24013 or be willing to relocate at their own expense.

Position Summary:

Assist in performing work involved with the installation, rearrangement, maintenance, operation, removal, and inspection of electrical transmission and distribution facilities; drive and operate line trucks and associated auxiliary equipment. All job duties apply to overhead and underground equipment and facilities.

Principal Accountabilities:
1.Assist with the assembly, installation, maintenance, removal and competently inspect underground facilities, conductors, fixtures, structures and other associated equipment on de-energized and grounded overhead and underground facilities under direct or immediate supervision.
2.Climb poles, towers and ladders and demonstrate evidence of being at ease above ground level during the performance of work tasks.
3.Demonstrate the ability to competently perform Ground person duties under immediate or direct supervision.
4.Assist with loading, unloading, handling, maintaining, installing and removing poles, towers and structures.
5.During the first six months in this classification, the employee must demonstrate the ability to operate Company equipment, climb poles and structures, and work on de-energized conductors and equipment. Also, under immediate supervision of a higher classification, may work secondary voltage up to 260 volts.
6.After six months in this classification, under general supervision may work on conductors and equipment energized up to 260 volts, and may also work higher secondary voltages under immediate supervision of a higher classification.
7.Assemble and install Line Material and hardware under direct or immediate supervision
8.Use and store hand lines, tie knots and demonstrate a basic working knowledge with ropes and rigging equipment inspection and use.
9.Splice primary and secondary overhead wires using the proper tools, hardware and equipment (including crimping and compression tools).
10. Inspect and maintain tools, equipment and work area in a safe, clean and orderly fashion
11. Identify, inspect, use and maintain all classes of rubber gloves and sleeves(PIPE), and insulating blankets, hoses and covers(IPE).
12. Inspect, maintain, organize, operate and stock company vehicles, equipment and tools.
13. Perform housekeeping duties as assigned.
14. Report irregularities and abnormal conditions.
15. Safely execute pole top rescue process
16. Protect or control work area.
17. Set and remove barricades, flags, signs, cones and associated equipment.
18. Maintain accurate records and submit accurate reports as required.
19. Correctly read and record information and registered readings on analog or digital Kilowatt-hour meters
20. Perform similar or less skilled work as assigned.

Perform work in accordance with the Company's safety rules, operating regulations, and practices. Some work may be performed off-site, outdoors, on a call-out basis, and may involve overnight travel. NOTE: During the first 1,040 hours in classification, employee can work on de-energized equipment. After 1,040 hours in classification and with direct supervision or assistance of personnel in a higher classification, employee can work on voltages up to 300 volts. Principal Accountabilities: 1. Under personnel in a higher classification, perform duties such as: 2. Assist in the repair of transformers, regulators, and other electrical equipment as assigned; clean distribution transformer windings, dry and insulate windings; take oil samples from transformers and various electrical equipment. 3. Assist in the repair of hydraulic and pneumatic systems, components, and devices such as control mechanisms, pumps, compressors, pistons, valves, etc. 4. Assemble and repair tools. 5. Prepare metal for welding; perform basic welding, soldering; assist welder in grinding, sanding, and cleaning when needed; assist in layouts and cuts for panels as directed. 6. Assist in panel wiring and perform basic wiring as directed and as shown on wiring drawings, prints, specifications, equipment instructions, and CAD drawings. 7. Clean equipment such as insulators, breaker and transformer tanks, etc., by use of mechanical cleaners or cleaning solutions; clean and mask surfaces in preparation for painting; paint and stencil equipment. 8. Assist in the testing of electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment and systems; make test connections, and operate microprocessor-based test instruments as directed; select and use single element devices to read voltage and current; perform routine oil tests. 9. Operate computers to record, update and print equipment nameplates, and maintain database records. 10. Operate company vehicles, forklifts; with assistance, operate other mobile equipment such as jib cranes and overhead cranes; perform rigging as directed; assist in the set-up and operation of vacuum processing, oil processing, and oil filtering equipment as assigned. 11. Know the safe operating procedures of all the tools utilized; maintain shop equipment, tools and power tools in good condition; follow good housekeeping practices by keeping work areas in a clean and orderly condition. 12.
