King County Metro Transit Facilities has an exciting opportunity for a Line Crew Chief.

The Line Crew Chief will be responsible for supervising staff to troubleshoot, maintain, repair, upgrade, and perform comprehensive preventive maintenance on assigned Transit electrical systems and facilities.

The ideal candidate for this position will be able to communicate effectively with a diverse employee work group, proactively solve problems that impact service delivery, and encourage a safety culture while inspiring high standards of customer service excellence, as well as the ability to motivate employees through building respect and trust.

This recruitment will immediately fill up to one (1) Career Service position, and may also be used to create an eligibility pool for future Career Service, as well as any fully-benefitted Term-Limited Temporary and/or Special Duty Assignments, valid up to 12 months or until exhausted and at the discretion of the hiring authority.

Interviews are anticipated to occur during the week of July 15 through July 19, 2024, but are subject to change.

Job Duties

Applying equity and social justice principles is a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all King County employees. In this role, you will apply equity and social justice principles that exemplify shared values, behaviors, and practices to all aspects of the work.

As the Line Crew Chief, you will:

  • Plan, supervise and evaluate the work of journey-level workers and subordinates.

  • Direct and supervise the erecting and maintenance and repair of assigned Transit electrical systems and facilities.

  • Control and monitor workflow; ensure adherence to all maintenance schedules.

  • Prepare requisitions for and ensure proper storage of tools, materials, equipment and supplies.

  • Prepare routine reports indicating kind and amount of repair work completed and materials used in such work.

  • Provide training on tools and materials, electrical systems, and related systems.

  • Provide safety training.

  • Respond to emergency calls for repairs during non-working hours, as necessary.

  • Coordinate and monitor safety and training programs.

  • Provide technical assistance to subordinate staff, contractors and employees of other jurisdictions.

  • Participate in planning, scheduling and estimating activities.

  • Demonstrate supervisory skills.

  • Ensure crews work safely; follow all safety rules and procedures.

  • Provide oral and written directions.

  • Work on and around high voltage equipment.

  • Knowledge of related laws and codes, including advanced knowledge of electrical and safety codes and regulations.

  • Ability to effectively engage in and sustain relationships with people from diverse cultures and socio-economic backgrounds.

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.

  • Demonstrate proficiency with business applications, such as email and word processing.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Three years of experience performing line work.

  • Four years of trolly overhead experience.

  • Journey-level line worker certification.

  • Knowledge of electrical and trolley overhead safety rules and regulations.

  • Knowledge of applicable sections of WAC 269-45 and other electrical and safety codes.

  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, schematics and specifications.

  • Knowledge and understanding of reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics and drawings.

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with electrical trades.

  • Knowledge and understanding of electrical theory, high voltage work, and modern industrial controls.

  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Skill in working with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team; maintain a standardized work pace.

  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Necessary Special Requirements:

Valid driver's license with acceptable driving history or the ability to obtain a WA state license within 30 days of hire.

SAFETY SENSITIVE

These positions are considered safety-sensitive. Applicants for positions defined as safety-sensitive are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and, subsequent to the commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with Federal DOT alcohol and controlled substances testing program protocols.

Work Schedule

The work week is normally 40 hours, Monday through Friday. Alternative work schedules may be possible. This position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, and are eligible for overtime pay with supervisor approval.

Work Location: This position report to the King County Power Distribution headquarters, located at 2255 4th Avenue S; Seattle, WA 98134.
