Job Summary

The AV Events team is looking for an AV Events Engineer with a specialty in lighting. In this role you will be assisting with all events within our production facilities. You must be able to select, set up and operate automated fixtures, lighting consoles, and portable LED video screens. Additionally, this role will include operation of special effects equipment for events. You will coordinate complex projects and communicate the technical implications to others, training, and teaching others of all levels. It is expected that you will communicate calmly and professionally with students and clients and maintain a high level of professional decorum. The AV Events Engineer in this position will perform maintenance and installation of a wide variety of lighting equipment. This position requires a high capacity to prioritize tasks according to urgency, handle multiple tasks concurrently, and work with others to accomplish complex technical goals, under pressure of high production standards for events that are frequently broadcast nationally.

What you'll do:

  • Supervise student lighting technicians in the load in, focus, operation and load out of the lighting systems for events.

  • Troubleshoot any technical problems encountered during an event.

  • Design lighting for events as assigned.

  • Operate the lighting system during performances, includes calling follow spot cues.

  • Program, run and busk on ETC light boards.

  • Ensure lighting technicians follow BYU and applicable industry standard safety procedures.

  • Plan and implement maintenance procedures for lighting systems.

  • Maintain lighting system paperwork.

  • All other duties as assigned.

What we are looking for:

Education and Experience:

We are seeking the most qualified candidates; the more you have, the more likely you are to be selected. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and skills.

Level 52: Associate degree or equivalent combination of education and experience (Approximate starting range: $28.50 to $37 hourly)

Level 53: Bachelor's degree or 4 years of a combination of education and engineering experience (Approximate starting range: $33.25 to $43 hourly)

Skills, abilities, or knowledge:

You are not required to have experience in all areas listed below. What you don't know we can teach you. We are seeking the most qualified candidates; the more you have, the more likely you are to be selected. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and skills.

  • Ability to work as a member of team; can comprehend and follow oral, written and diagram instructions.

  • Can work extensive and irregular work hours; early morning, afternoon, evening, late evening, weekend, and holidays is common.

  • Must have the ability to lift 50 lbs.

  • No history of vertigo or a fear of heights.

  • 2+ years of experience lighting theatrical and/or corporate events in large venue settings.

  • Proficiency on any moving light board.

  • Familiar with lighting industry specific software.

  • Basic electrical troubleshooting skills.

  • Rigging experience.

  • Lighting network configuration.

Employee Class: 3/4 Time (28 hour)

Work Location: Provo Campus

Environment: Periodic exposure to unfavorable conditions. Need to be in variable temperatures or wet environments, etc.

Physical Exam Required: Y

Physical Exam Details: Moderate ¿ Physical effort represented by frequent handling of medium weight objects (approx. 20-50 lbs.) and materials, or use of medium weight hand tools. May require climbing and working from ladders or in awkward positions. Examples include: Lift 30-50 lbs. without assistance, 5 minutes/time, 1 to 5 days per week Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time, 2 hours or more, 1 to 5 days per week Must be able to climb ladders and work in high steel rigging, 2 hours or more, 1 to 5 days per week, Rigging safety equipment May be exposed to temperature extremes in high ceiling rigging May be exposed to extremes and weather (outdoor events)
