General Summary: Operates and maintains equipment used for road maintenance; and assists in the construction and repair of county roads and bridges.

Essential Duties: Operates various types of equipment for county road maintenance and construction projects, including steel roller, rubber roller, boom mower, tractor and blade. Maintains equipment, including checking oil, water, fuel, tires, and hydraulic system, and making appropriate adjustments; Smooths road surfaces; Clears ditches and culverts; Mows ditches and rights-of-way as needed; Assists with basic maintenance of fences and bridges; Performs work with hand tools, including digging trenches, cutting down trees and brush, and removing driftwood and debris from culverts; Directs traffic at work sites as needed; Assists with patching, tamping, packing, and leveling coal mix, dirt, or other materials during road repair; and Loads light equipment, standard hand tools, and road maintenance materials onto haul truck; Performs additional duties as assigned, such as, mailbox installations; and Securing appropriate hazardous warning signs.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities -Methods, practices, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance of roadways; safe operation of the equipment used and of the provisions of the Texas Motor Vehicle Code relating to operation of light motorized equipment. Operate equipment used in road construction and maintenance; service and make minor repairs on equipment; apply safety standards to prevent hazards; understand and follow instructions; tolerate outside working conditions, including exposure to adverse weather conditions; work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers; and maintain Texas driver's license applicable to job responsibilities.

The Equipment Operator is proficient in the use of a diverse range of construction equipment, including, Excavators, Loaders, Dozers, Rollers, Graders, and other pieces of equipment. Minimum Qualifications: 1. General education, grammar and arithmetic, GED or high school diploma or equivalent. 2. Preferred knowledge of earthwork, road and highway construction. 3. Experience operating a diverse range of construction equipment preferred. 4. Experience with equipment maintenance & operation. 5. Ability to communicate with foreman and crew. 6. Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and physical. 7. Ability to maintain valid driver's license. Essential Duties/Responsibilites: 1. Operate all heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner. 2. Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment. 3. Safely and properly perform maintenance (lubricating, fueling and cleaning) on equipment. 4. Maneuver heavy equipment into loading or unloading positions, following signals from loading crew as needed; check that the vehicle position is correct and any special loading equipment is properly positioned. 5. Use various pieces of equipment to perform fine grading and finishing, sloping and banking, backfilling, demolition, ditching, loading, excavating and stockpiling. 6. Operate equipment on public roadways, maintaining proper awareness of ones surroundings. 7. Perform routine cleaning and maintenance to ensure smooth operation of the equipment. 8. Troubleshoot and problem solve situations/problems (equipment operation/repair, etc.). Monitor and discuss production problems with co-workers and managers/supervisors. 9. Ensure MSHA, OSHA, EPA, DNR, safety and environmental regulation compliance. 10. Perform other construction related duties as required. 11. Timely and regular attendance is an essential requirement.
