The Lifeguard is responsible for patrolling and standing watch at an indoor or outdoor swimming pool to keep swimmers under control and enforce pool rules. Although much of the work is routine, an error in judgment might result in loss of life. Related work is performed as required.
Stands watch or patrols swimming pool, keeping bathers within bounds and going to their aid when they are in difficulty;
Maintains order and compliance by enforcing pool rules;
Administers first aid and CPR as required;
Advises swimmers regarding basic swimming techniques;
Keeps pool and pool deck and approved swimming area free of debris and maintains cleanliness;
Ensures that the proper emergency rescue equipment is readily accessible and well maintained;
Performs opening and closing procedures associated with assigned swimming facility;
Assists staff with patrolling locker-rooms, hallways;
Moves and resets lane lines or other floating markers;
May operate chlorinator and sanitation system at indoor or outdoor swimming pool;
Tests water for proper chemical balance.
Possession of a current American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Lifeguard Certifications or equivalent certifications as recognized by the New York State Department of Health. Must be 15 years of age at time of appointment.
