The City of Oxnard's Cultural and Community Services Department is seeking Lifeguards to join our team!

Under general supervision, provides lifeguard services for public swimming and instruction.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Lifeguard I is the entry level classification that allows the incumbent to develop journey level knowledge and abilities. Initially under closer supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of lifeguard duties and may reasonably expect to have the position allocated to the II level after gaining experience and demonstrating a level of proficiency which meets the qualifications for the higher level class.

The Lifeguard II is the journey level classification in which incumbents are expected to independently perform the full scope of assigned duties. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and normally filled by advancement from Lifeguard I, or when filled from the outside, require prior experience in lifeguard and swim instruction. This class is distinguished from the next higher classification of Senior Lifeguard in that the latter performs duties requiring a broader and more detailed understanding of operations, and has the responsibility for supervision and training of assigned personnel.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:

General supervision is provided by a Senior Lifeguard or higher level recreation program personnel. A Lifeguard II may provide functional and technical supervision to subordinates.

WORK SCHEDULE:

These positions work various schedules and at various locations throughout the city of Oxnard. These positions may be required to be available to work additional hours as needed to respond to workload needs. These positions are not governed by the overtime provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and are eligible for overtime pay.

PLEASE NOTE:

Extra-Help positions are not expected to last more than 960 hours. Under the terms of the City's benefits plan and policies, this position is not eligible for benefits due to the short duration of employment. In this position, employment with the City of Oxnard is at will, and those selected for temporary placement retain the option, as does the City of Oxnard, to end employment at any time, with or without notice and with or without cause.

Essential Functions

Include but are not limited to the following:

  • Supervises the activities of swimmers in and around a public swimming pool; enforces pool regulations and water safety policies.

  • Rescues swimmers in distress, administers first aid in the event of injury, and administers artificial respiration and other resuscitation procedures, if required.

  • Collects and accounts for swimming pool admission fees.

  • Assists in registering pool patrons; collects monies; balances and reconciles cash drawer.

  • Instructs scheduled classes in the fundamentals of swimming and water safety.

  • Participates in cleaning the pool and related facilities and equipment.

  • Inspects and maintains lifesaving equipment and apparatus.

  • Performs other related duties as is necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

The following are minimal qualifications necessary for entry into the classification:

Education and Experience: Must be at least 16 years of age. High School diploma or GED preferred. Previous experience in a similar role.

License/Certificate:

Lifeguard Trainee (Recreation Aide I):

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid class C California driver's license.

  • Training/Certification will be provided during employment.

Lifeguard I & Lifeguard II:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid class C California driver's license.

  • A valid First Aid/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate must be obtained within six months of appointment.

  • Possession of a current American Red Cross Lifeguard certificate (including the Title 22: First Aid for Public Safety Personnel) before hire date.

  • Possession of a current American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer Certificate or American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate before hire date.

Lifeguard II Only: Possession of a Water Safety Instructor's Certificate.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be able to communicate in English effectively both orally and in writing.

General Information

Selected candidate(s) must pass a thorough background investigation. Extra Help employees are "at-will" and are not provided any benefits other than those required by state or federal law.

For most positions, the City of Oxnard relies on office automation (Microsoft Office) and web-based enabled tools (G Suite), therefore candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with on-going work.

Regular and reliable attendance, effective communication skills, and the development of effective working relationships are requirements of all positions.

City staff may be required to play an active role in the event of an emergency, which may include changes in responsibilities and working hours.

There are currently multiple Extra Help positions in the Cultural and Community Services Department.

Employees are required to participate in the City's direct deposit plan and are paid on a bi-weekly basis.

Pursuant to California Government Code Section 3100, all public employees are required to serve as disaster service workers subject to such disaster service activities as may be assigned to them.
