Definition

This is seasonal recreation work in supervising swimmers at a municipal swimming pool.

An employee in this class is responsible for protecting users of a public pool from injury and for enforcing regulations in connection with the prevention of accidents. The summer season for employees in this class begins April 1 and ends December 1 each year. The winter season begins November 1 and ends May 1 each year.

Works under the direction of a Pool Manager exercising independent judgment in carrying out duties.

Characteristic Work

Maintains the safety of all swimmers. Cleans pool area and maintains safe swimming conditions to insure the safety of participants.

Monitors activities and facilities to maintain order and ensure a safe/clean environment for participants and to prevent vandalism or facility damage. Provides approved first aid as needed. Assists in preparing and maintaining a variety of records such as class attendance, accurate records of hours worked and pool attendance, incident and accident reports, daily water balance readings, and inventory records.

Informs supervisor of needs for supplies and equipment. Maintains order, safety and cleanliness in pool, deck areas, bath house, locker areas and restrooms and assures that proper rules and regulations are followed. Assists supervisor with the operation and maintenance of various pool equipment as needed.

Secures items found and takes necessary steps to assure they are returned to owner. Monitors swimmers to assure safe practices and to look for problems. Assists Red Cross personnel in teaching swimming lessons.

Orders swimmers out of pool for rest periods, inclement weather conditions or other safety reasons. Assists in emergency rescue operations by taking appropriate lifesaving action which may require entering the pool to administer this action. Performs CPR in emergency situations as required.

Maintains and projects a positive image of the City of Akron to patrons and general public using the facility. Lifts up to fifty pounds of supplies to storage areas and in and out of car. Answers telephone and uses voice mail.

Adheres to all City and Departmental policies, procedures, rules and regulations. Learns and follows City and Departmental practices and safety procedures. On days when the pool is closed, may be assigned to general maintenance duties in and around the pool area. Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a valid American Red Cross Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED Certificate.

Knowledge of lifeguarding techniques, first aid, AED, and rescue procedures. Knowledge of principles and practices for providing excellent customer service.

Skill in judgment and decision making. Skill in monitoring or assessing situations and taking corrective action.

Ability to apply first aid. Ability to perform artificial respiration and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Ability to swim with proficiency and endurance. Ability to detect actions that may endanger the safety of participants or others. Ability to remain undistracted from the primary goal of maintaining discipline and order.

Ability to maintain surveillance over persons using a public swimming facility. Ability to deal effectively with the public, supervisors, and associates. Ability to lift supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. List of essential functions available upon request.

The candidates will be ranked in a standard manner based on information, records, and other data related to the candidate's ability to perform the duties of the position sought.

RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.

VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.
