We are looking for someone to join Team Yuma as a Lifeguard, working with the Department of Parks & Recreation - Aquatics Division. This ideal candidate will be assigned duties related to swimming activities at the aquatics facility and ensures that policies, guidelines, and safety procedures are followed.
Under close supervision, monitors activities in City pool facilities to assure public safety and compliance with state rules and regulations, and City policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. This is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed by incumbents of this class; employees may be assigned duties which are not listed below; reasonable accommodations will be made as required. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Enforces pool safety rules and regulations; may assist in teaching swimming techniques.
Monitors swimming and other pool activities to prevent accidents; rescues swimmers in danger of drowning and applies cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid; writes accident and incident reports.
Inspects swimming pool for cleanliness and performs routine maintenance, including tests of water in the pool to determine chemical balance of chlorinators; maintains pool facilities.
Recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe conditions, accidents and injuries.
Supports the relationship between the City and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities, vision, values and the "Yuma Way", and complies with all City policies and procedures.
Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience GuidelinesNo specific educational or experience requirements; must be at least 16 years of age.
Knowledge of:
City policies and procedures.
Rules and regulations governing the safety of municipal aquatics facilities and equipment.
Lifesaving methods and procedures, including first aid, water rescue, and resuscitation measures.
Skill in:
Promoting a positive recreation environment and good personal behavior.
Monitoring pool facility and guests for violations of rules and safety standards.
Effectively using emergency techniques for standard water approach, rescue and resuscitation.
Acting quickly and calmly in emergency situations, and promoting safety standards.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
A valid Arizona State Driver's License may be required. Must possess certificates for American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, and First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (C.P.R.) for the Professional Rescuer.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed indoors and outdoors in public swimming pool environments. Incumbents must maintain a level of physical fitness to meet Department standards.
Seasonal part-time-an employee who works up to 40 hours per week, but only for the designated season of the program. Seasonal employees will not exceed 6 months of employment.
Irregular part-time- an employee who is hired to work an irregular or varied weekly work schedule not to normally exceed 28 hours per week. The average hours worked per week may not exceed 28 hours. This position is year-round.
