The Position

Lifeguard Aides are responsible for assisting in recreational activities, programs and services at the beach. Lifeguard Aides will provide customer services to the public and support lifeguard operations in a non-safety manor.

Lifeguard Aides are contract/seasonal employees. Work schedules will vary and may include working holidays and weekends.

Lifeguard Aides are non-safety personnel and do not perform lifeguard duties.

Examples of Important & Essential Duties (included but not limited to)

Essential Duties of the Recreation Assistant: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

  • Provides general assistance to the public;
  • Assists in recreation and marine safety programs, activities, and events for variety of ages at different facilities;
  • Conducts, coordinates, teaches and participates in group recreation and marine safety activities for assigned areas of responsibility;
  • Organizes group games and tournaments;
  • Prepares, maintains and/or cleans up assigned facilities and equipment for activities or services;
  • Issues, collects and organizes recreation and marine safety equipment and supplies for activities and services;
  • Performs a variety of general and routine administrative tasks in support of recreation and marine safety programs in assigned areas of responsibility including registration data entry using software related to assigned functions and modern office equipment;
  • Maintains records, forms and documentation on assigned activities or services;
  • Develops flyers, correspondence, or reports for group recreation activities or services;
  • Directs the program use and care of assigned facilities and equipment;
  • Assists in the enforcement of established rules, policies and procedures at City beaches, City Community Center, park facilities and events;
  • Assists in the public education of City Municipal Codes, rules and regulations at City beaches, City Community Center, park facilities and events;
  • Registers customers for events/activities and collect fees;
  • Works with community groups and organizations;
  • Adheres to The City of Encinitas and San Dieguito Water District Safety Manual and provides safe transportation for participants of Parks and Recreation and Marine Safety events and activities;
  • Uses and maintains City vehicles to run errands including picking up program and event supplies, etc.

The ideal candidates will have Knowledge of: customer service principles; objectives of recreational and marine safety activities;Instructional techniques; basic mathematical and reading concepts; record keeping; computer programs related to area of assignment; English language, grammar, and punctuation; laws and regulations in driving a vehicle. The ideal candidates will have Skills in: providing customer service; using computers and related software applications;performing routine mathematical calculations; working with money; reading; record keeping; performing multiple tasks simultaneously; driving a vehicle; swimming; communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Minimum Qualifications

Training and Experience (position requirements at entry):

If under 16 years of age must provide work permit or currently enrolled in high school with an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Examples of Important & Essential Duties (included but not limited to) Patrol and perform preventative actions, rescues, and safety interventions; render aid and medical assistance; issue water safety warnings; operate and maintain rescue equipment; advise the public of laws, rules, regulations, and safety practices governing beach use; respond to call outs for beach and other emergencies and perform related duties and responsibilities. Essential duties require the strenuous physical activities and skills associated with open water lifeguarding. The work environment includes possible exposure to cold, heat, chemical, biological, environmental and mechanical hazards. Candidates must have the ability to travel to different sites and locations. Minimum Qualifications Required to test for Lifeguard: * Certificate of completion, or proof of current enrollment in "Intro to Open Water Lifeguarding /Lifeguard Academy" is required * Completed on-line City application * Candidates must be at least 18 years of age at time of testing * Valid Driver's License or picture ID at time of testing Required to be hired as a Lifeguard: In addition to the above, the following certifications must be completed and submitted to Human Resources.
