The position of Life Safety Officer/Custodian is established by the Blackstone Valley Vocational Regional School District Committee for the purpose of having a qualified person whose job is to help maintain a secure and safe school environment and maintain a clean and attractive school environment. The work entails early morning student and school security, responsibility and maintenance of Safety Data Sheet (SDS) systems, periodic and ongoing safety tours and following a systematic procedure for cleaning and safely maintaining designated areas around the school.

Responsibilities and Duties:
1.Perform all tasks assigned by the Facilities Manager to insure the constant secure, clean, safe, and attractive environment for all inhabitants and users of the facilities and grounds.
2.Assist in monitoring safe staff and student morning access and drop off.
3.Secure all exterior doors following student and staff arrival.
4.Manage completely the school's maintenance request system (School Dude).
5.Provide Safety and Environmental inspection tour of every vocational program on a monthly basis, produce an OSHA inspection report for each inspection, and work with the Team Leader on corrective measures.
6.Perform monthly AED (Automated External Defibrillator) inspections and schedule battery, pad, or other replacement component as required.
7.Assist in scheduling and working with certain life safety contractors, which may include but not limited to servicing eyewash/shower stations, fire alarm, fire protection, chemical neutralization systems, etc.
8.Provide back up in the Facility Office as needed, which may include, but not limited to phone coverage, loading dock receipts, contractor interaction, etc.
9.At the end of the school day, assist in the safe departure of the students and student buses.
10.Ability to access available websites to obtain information on proper chemical use.
11.Assist in student locker maintenance and locker combination changes and annual summer cleaning and disinfecting of all student lockers.
12.Undertake repairs when qualified and able to perform.
13.Remain current with documentation and information regarding proper codes, safety data sheets (SDS), use of cleaning, maintenance materials and equipment. Possess a detailed understanding on the requirements of SDS forms.
14.Weekly inspection and documentation of the school's generator and solar power system.
15.Schedule at a minimum, semi-annual training sessions with the entire facility staff.
16.Possess a basic understanding of the chemicals and processes used in the department cleaning schedule.
17.Utilize all required safety equipment necessary to perform maintenance tasks when hazardous work is performed.
18.Possess an ability to effectively communicate and refer student issues to the Assistant Principal as needed.
19.Possess an ability to effectively communicate with all staff regarding schedules, safety, training, and other relevant issues or concerns.
20.Assume custodial duties as needed. Ability to learn disinfecting procedures as they relate to COVID, flu, and any other similar situations whereas the State dictates special precautions. May be required to oversee and/or provide specialized cleaning as needed. This may include, but not limited to, blood borne pathogens, COVID or infectious cleaning. This includes areas within the School Based Health Care COVID Room.
21.Required to perform snow removal tasks if the need arises (Plow truck, sander, snow blower, front-end loader).
22.Clean lavatories and fixtures, corridors, rugs, windows, floors, walls, furniture and other building furnishings. Be familiar with operation and maintenance of power scrubbers, buffers, burnishers, waxers, vacuums and grounds maintenance equipment. `
23.Watch for, respond to, and report safety hazards.
24.Possess an understanding of zone cleaning and has the ability to work with and interface with teachers and staff as needed.
25.Understands and maintains continued education in Right to Know, MSDS forms, personal protection requirements, body fluid cleanup and response, and other such required training.
26.Other duties as assigned and within the scope of the department or position.

Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. 2.Be able to adapt to a changing work environment.
3.Be capable of handling minor repairs.
4.Previous knowledge and experience with implementing staff and vocational department training.
5.Be physically and emotionally capable of carrying-out responsibilities and duties within a facilities department. This position requires frequent physical exertion. Several hours a day will be spent walking, standing, sitting and climbing whenever necessary. Staff is frequently expected to lift 20-50 pounds and must be able, if necessary, shovel snow or salt and will be required to use hand and power tools and equipment.
6.Previous experience in facility safety and environmental services.
7.Possess some experience in maintenance work.
8.Possess proficient keyboarding skills and have working knowledge of (but not limited to) Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.
9.Possess a valid driver's license and good driving record in order to be authorized to operate Valley Tech's vehicles.
10.Possess adequate reading, writing, and communication skills to perform the essential functions of the position.
11.Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Facilities Manager may find appropriate and acceptable.
12.Be available to work overtime as needed.
13.2A, 1C licensure required.

Line of Authority:
1.Responsible directly to the Facilities Manager.

Compensation and Terms of Employment:
1.This position is rated as a full-time assignment, which provides environmental services, safety, training, custodial, and other facility associated services according to an established schedule when school is in session and also provides other relevant services and maintenance as assigned by the Facilities Manager when school is not in session throughout the calendar year. The work shift will be eight and one-half hours long, consisting of 8 work hours with a half-hour non-paid lunch period per day. This scheduled shift will be 7:00 am - 3:30 pm. This position may also be asked or required to work a day during the weekend to cover an event or other special task.
2.Compensation is based on successful candidate's credentials, approvals and experience. FLSA Designation: Non-exempt hourly.
