Position Summary

The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) holds a vital role in providing specialized physical health care services to children in grades TK-12 with specialized physical health needs. With strict adherence to the guidelines provided by the student's health care provider and/or the credentialed school nurse, the LVN is responsible for carrying out a range of services that cater to the individual child's needs. These services may include administration of medications, insulin and glucose management, urinary catheterization, gastric tube feeding, tracheostomy care, ventilators, toileting/diaper changing. The LVN may need to accompany students during bus transportation to and from school, field trips, or other school-related activities that require travel.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:

  • At least 2 years of experience in clinical nursing and/or school nursing working with children with chronic health conditions or special care needs.

Education:

  • Current California Licensed Vocational Nurse Certificate

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Perform work under the direction of a school nurse carried out in accordance with provisions of the LVN license.

  • Performs or assists the credentialed School Nurse with basic nursing care, personal care, and protocols including but are not limited to blood pressure monitoring, catheterization, diabetic monitoring and daily care, gastrostomy tube feeding and care, feeding or medicating, toileting and positioning, mechanical ventilation care, oxygen administration, respiratory assistance with inhaler or nebulizer, tracheostomy care including cleaning, suctioning, and tube replacement.

  • Administer medication and treatments to student(s) according to medical orders from health care providers and under the direction of the credentialed school nurse. This may include emergency medications such as rectal Diastat for seizures, epinephrine for severe allergies, and glucagon for severe hypoglycemia.

  • Document appropriate daily assessment, specialized physical health care service procedures, medications, changes regarding student's condition, and response to procedures on appropriate logs including student health records, accident reports, and Medi-Cal billing logs, and input data into the student information system.

  • Assist credentialed school nurse (e.g. documents, medications, health care supplies, etc.).

  • Follow the policies and procedures set up by the State or County Health Department(s) and the school district for the control of communicable diseases.

  • Assist students with physical and health needs during school sponsored off site activities.

  • Prepare and clean medical equipment/supplies.

  • Participate in promoting a safe and healthful school environment.

  • Work with teachers/instructional assistants and other school personnel to ensure the safety of students.

  • Attend team meetings with School Nurse for the purpose of gathering individualized clinical and education information required to perform functions.

  • Must be an independent, self-directed worker with excellent communication skills.

  • Must be able to remain calm during stressful situations on a school campus.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical, Mental and Environmental Demands

Physical: Ability to navigate office and school campuses, and meet students and staff in different spaces. Ability to access and utilize technology. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel or crouch; push/pull objects and reach overhead. Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and or lift more than 25 lbs with assistance. Eyesight, corrected or uncorrected, sufficient to observe road markings and road signs. Hearing, sufficient with or without use of hearing aid, to hear student requests and understand voice and speech patterns. Physical stamina to sit for extended periods of time.

Mental: Stress of deadlines and normal work standards, ability to analyze problems and generate alternatives, work with interruptions, concentrate for long periods of time, read, calculate, perform routine math problems, memorize and recall objects and people.

Environmental: Classroom environment subject to constant interruptions and distractions. Ability to accompany a student on a school bus or to off campus school-sponsored activity. In an emergency context (e.g., pandemic), work may be conducted virtually fully or partially for extended periods of time or longer.

Classification

This is a full-time, non-exempt position based on a school calendar, located at KIPP Esperanza High School at 1039 Garden St, East Palo Alto, CA 94303. This position is 100% in person.

We benchmark annually against comparably-sized non-profit organizations in the regions where we operate, to offer competitive salaries. The pay range for this position is between $30.29 - $41.59 per hour based on experience.
