QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification Required:
High school diploma and graduation from an accredited school for vocational nurses.
Current license issued by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners
Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation for health care providers.
Valid Texas driver's license.
Certification Preferred:
Current certification of completion for a course of instruction in first aid from the American Red Cross.
Current Texas Department of State Health Services certification in vision, hearing, and spinal screening.
Current certification in Acanthosis Nigricans screening.
Technology Proficiency: Level 2-Applied (use of)
Computer operations
Software productivity tools (i.e., Microsoft Office)
Printers

Experience Preferred:
Previous experience in school nursing or the health care of children.
Two years' experience in a phase of community health that includes contact with school-age children.
Personal Qualifications Required:
Ability to communicate in verbal and written form in a clear, concise manner.
Ability to work well with others.
Preference for working with and caring for children.
Ability to work with handicapped children.
Proof of Hepatitis B immunization.
Flexibility to change campus assignment as district needs arise.
FUNCTION:
The licensed vocational nurse (L.V.N.) works under the direction of the Coordinator for Student Health Services and the assigned principal. The L.V.N. works under the immediate guidance and supervision of a registered nurse (R.N.) and campus principal in implementing the school health program and rendering health services to students. The licensed vocational nurse may be subject to a split campus assignment as district needs arise.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & REQUIREMENTS:
Manages and maintains adequate health rooms, and implements health services program under the general direction of school nurse (R.N.) and Coordinator for Student Health Services.
Provides emergency care, first aid for students and employees, and medication administration for students.
Conducts health-screening procedures such as height/weight, vision, hearing, spinal, and Acanthosis Nigricans; and/or head-lice checks.
Assists in enforcing communicable disease control.
Gathers and maintains immunization information on all students, and keeps immunization records current as required by state immunization law. Notifies parents of required immunization doses due and provides follow-up in a timely manner.
Maintains accurate records, and prepares reports as required by administrative policy, Texas Education Agency, state law, and Coordinator for Student Health Services.
Contributes to promotion of a safe healthy school environment.
Works well with parents and medical health care community to promote optimum delivery of health care services to students.
Anticipates supply and equipment needs appropriate to maintaining a continuous, functional, building-level program.
Participates in faculty activities.
Maintains confidentiality, and adheres to Board policy.
Performs other job-related activities as assigned by the appropriate chain of command.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Ability to work in multiple-task setting and to maintain emotional control under stress.
Cognitive ability and emotional stability to make sound judgment pertaining to the health care needs of students.
Ability to perform nursing procedures and first aid.
Ability to perform emergency procedures, such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Heimlich maneuver.
Ability to sit, stand and ambulate entire campus.
Ability to lift or carry 1-40 lbs.
Ability to bend, stop, and reach above shoulder level
Ability to climb stairs and ramps
Ability to travel to multiple campuses as district needs arise
