The Austin State Supported Living Center (AUSSLC) is seeking a Licensed Vocational Nurse III to join an interdisciplinary team of professionals to provide clinical care to individuals of the AUSSLC. As a State Supported Living Licensed Vocational Nurse III, you will work at the AUSSLC campus with a dynamic group of staff and professionals who are dedicated to providing supports and services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Licensed Vocational Nurse III Provides advanced senior level vocational nursing work. Work involves providing for the care, treatment, and general welfare of individuals.

May plan, assign and/or supervise the work of others. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Works under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and performs Nursing duties within the assigned areas and assigned shift.

Performs basic and complex nursing tasks to fulfill the health needs of the most medically fragile individuals, including the collection of lab work and other health screenings. Keeps informed of and follows all agency, facility and unit policies and procedures.

Assists the RN Supervisor with on-the-job Nursing instruction and training, precepting and setting goals for new LVN's.

Assists the Infection Control nurse by implementing measures that prevent the spread of disease, assists the QA Nurse in developing and implementing quality assurance programs, and assists in the implementation of therapeutic nursing programs. Essential Job Functions:

1.Administers medications and treatments orally, rectally, internally, or by injection. (10%)

2.Performs technical Nursing procedures according to facility and state regulations after demonstration for competency, i.e., tracheostomy care, gastrostomy/jejunostomy care, wound care, breathing treatments. (10%)

3.Must be competent in use of all medical equipment after competency is demonstrated. (5%)

4.Documents and reports pertinent observations. Is able to recognize symptoms of illness and report accurately to RN and/or Primary Care Provider. (5%)

5.Documents according to facility policy. (5%)

6.Collects data for RN/ Primary Care Provider. Monitors for signs and symptoms of illness. (5%)

7.Leads, monitors, and oversees others who are monitoring individuals before, during, and after treatments and procedures are completed. (15%)

8.Serves as a preceptor to new LVN Is and IIs on the unit; assists the new LVN to complete the "on the job training" checklist, observes and gives feedback as the new LVN performs daily assignments, plans daily learning experiences for new LVN, meets with the new LVN's manager at the end of the orientation/ preceptorship to discuss progress made, and is a continued resource for the new LVN. (15%)

9.Provides educational and safety training to other staff. (10%)



  1. Collects specimens for laboratory examination and conducts appropriate screening tests (after competency is documented) when requested by lab personnel. (5%)

  2. Participates in facility Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement initiatives. (10%)

  3. Participates in at least one facility committee as requested on a regular basis. (5%)

  4. Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.


Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

Knowledge Skills Abilities:

Must have nursing experience. Knowledge of nursing procedures, techniques, principles and processes used in providing individual care.

Must possess the knowledge to provide individual care, prepare and maintain records, communicate effectively, and train others.

Ability to apply principles and practices to assess, prevent, and treat disease processes.

Ability to utilize critical thinking skills to identify problems, assess the situation, and ensure resolution. Must maintain current CPR certification.

Must have strength and flexibility to safely perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of emergency procedures and emergency equipment.

Registration or Licensure Requirements:

Licensed to practice as a licensed vocation nurse in the state of Texas (or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact). Initial Selection Criteria:

1.Licensed to practice as a licensed vocation nurse in the state of Texas (or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact);

2.3 (three) years nursing experience preferred.

Additional Information:

All applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and HHS OIG List of Excluded Individuals/ Entities. Males between the ages of 18 - 25 must be registered with the Selective Service.

All State Supported Living Center employees are subject to Random Drug Testing. Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position.

The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours.
