Summary:

Under direct supervision of Registered Nurse, the Licensed Practical Vocational Nurse / LPN / LVN job provides nursing care within the scope of licensure for assigned patients according to established nursing standards and hospital policies and procedures.

' Under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Licensed Practical Vocational Nurse / LPN / LVN administers medication, performs treatments and patient care responsibilities as prescribed.

' The Licensed Practical Vocational Nurse / LPN / LVN consults with and keeps Registered Nurse informed of activities, symptoms, reactions, and changes in the patient's condition with regard to assigned patients.

' The Licensed Practical Vocational Nurse / LPN / LVN provides appropriate pain management techniques and educates the patient and family regarding pain management.

' The Licensed Practical Vocational Nurse / LPN / LVN administers medication following the five rights of medication administration within scope of practice.

' The Licensed Practical Vocational Nurse / LPN / LVN assists with the rehabilitation and treatment of patients in accordance with the medical plan of care, updates, and revises plan of care under the supervision of Registered Nurse.

' The Licensed Practical Vocational Nurse / LPN / LVN assists physicians with examinations, treatments and special procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills as directed by the Registered Nurse.

' The Licensed Practical Vocational Nurse / LPN / LVN treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.

' The Licensed Practical Vocational Nurse / LPN / LVN interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.

' The Licensed Practical Vocational Nurse / LPN / LVN assists with admitting, discharging and transferring of patients.

' The Licensed Practical Vocational Nurse / LPN / LVN identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family; communicates with Social Services/Discharge Planner regarding both in-hospital and post discharge needs.

Education:

Graduate of an accredited program for Licensed Vocational/Practical Nurses.

Licenses/Certification:

BCLS Certification.

Intravenous Blood Certification preferred.

Experience:

Minimum six months prior experience in an acute care setting preferred.

The County of San Diego Sheriff's Department is offering an exciting job opportunity as a Sheriff's Detentions Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) Sheriff's Detentions LVNs provide nursing care to patients in one of the San Diego County detention facilities. Duties include assisting in clinics, caring and treating individuals with medical or psychiatric conditions, and responding to emergencies. Tasks performed can include but not limited to the preparation and administration of medications, venipuncture, performing simple lab tests, and wound care. This class differs from Licensed Vocational Nurse in that the latter is found in the Health and Human Services Agency and provides skilled nursing care to patients and clients at mental health facilities, a geriatric/long-term rehabilitation hospital, and public health clinics. Required Education/Experience: * Completion of a recognized Vocational Nursing Program and continuing education; AND; * Possession of a current license to practice vocational nursing in the State of California, which must be maintained throughout employment; AND; * Possession of a current CPR and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) card at the time of application, which must be maintained throughout employment. Note: Possession of an Intravenous and Blood Withdrawal Certificate is required at the time of appointment. A copy of your CPR/AED card and a copy of your nursing license MUST be submitted in order to apply for this position. All required documents must be submitted with your application in order to determine your eligibility to compete. Desirable Traits: * Nursing experience in correctional, psychiatric, geriatric, cardiac care, and emergency settings. * Certification in CCHP and certification of completion of courses in Blood Withdrawal and/or IV Therapy. * Communicates effectively, knowledge worker; customer focused; respectful of others; driven to excel; can demonstrate ethical behavior, is a team player and supportive of change. Click here for a complete job description including minimum qualifications and working conditions, etc. Working Conditions: * Work environment is in a locked detention facility. * Incumbents may be exposed to infectious illnesses and to inmate patients whose behavior is unpredictable and occasionally violent and combative. * Incumbents may be subject to work rotating shifts (Morning, Mid-day, and Night), holidays, and weekends. * Must be able to lift up to 15 lbs. and occasionally 50 lbs. Background Qualifications: * Must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. * Felony convictions will be disqualifying. * Misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency. * Prior to appointment, candidates WILL be subject to a thorough background investigation which may include a psychological, polygraph or other examination or test.
