The Licensed Vocational Nurse will provide direct patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse to adults, adolescents, or children, as prescribed by the physician and treatment team. To provide for the dispensing of prescribed medications to patients and to provide safety and crisis management for patient populations and document the provision of care.


1.Provides leadership and direction to Mental Health Workers.

2.Assists in collection and documentation of a comprehensive database.

3.Administers medication and medical treatment as prescribed by a physician or physician's assistant.

4.Provides structure to and assists in maintaining the therapeutic environment.

5.Directly intervenes and assists the RN in psychiatric and/or medical crisis situations.

6.Involved in activities of daily living in order to encourage positive behaviors and foster self-care.

7.Adheres to all facility, level of care and program policies and procedures.

8.Performs other duties as assigned.


SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of appropriate nursing, diagnosis, and intervention with psychiatric patients.

Ability to accurately administer medication and monitor side effects. Knowledge of milieu. Ability to delegate responsibility to Mental Health Workers and monitor their performance.

Ability to safely implement special treatment procedures. Skill in developing therapeutic relationships with adults, children, adolescents and their families. Skill in preparing and maintaining appropriate medical record documentation.

EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited school of LVN nursing.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: Current Texas State LVN nurse license. Current Texas driver's license, CPR certification.

EXPERIENCE: Experience preferred in field of Mental Health Nursing.


  • Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and ability to run.

  • Ability to assist in restraining patients.

  • Lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • Vision and hearing must be correctable to normal range.

  • Requires fine manipulation with both hands.

  • Must have good physical condition and mobility.

  • Emotional stability necessary to perform essential functions.

  • Must be able to speak clearly and write legibly
