Location: MASH, 6565 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, CA, 90038

Reports To: All ECC Department Leadership

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Required Certification: Registered Veterinary Technician Licenses

Summary

It is the responsibility of the Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) to give responsible and compassionate care to all patients at Metropolitan Animal Specialty Hospital (MASH) as well as monitoring, treating patients, and keeping detailed records during their stay at MASH. The role of an RVT at MASH encompasses many aspects. Patient care is our priority and supersedes all else. Individuals are expected to be compassionate, understanding, and knowledgeable in Veterinary Technology. The right individual for this position will also assist in providing quality, compassionate care for all our clients and patients. An RVT must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and a strong professional relationship with all staff in order to perform the work as delegated and produce quality results. An intimate knowledge of the day-to-day functions of the departments, patient care, and client service skills are a must. This position requires a dependable, high-energy person who can handle multiple tasks at one time in a high-stress environment.

Job Relationships:

  • Reports to and works closely with the department supervisors and manager.

  • Works closely with Leadership Teams in any admitting departments and with all Department Supervisors.

  • Any and all MASH employees.

Essential Functions:

  • Core competencies: Interdisciplinary leadership, team building, performance improvement, communication, multitasking; works jointly with the Emergency and ICU/Med-Surg Supervisor and the Emergency and Critical Care Department Manager.

  • Provides compassionate care to patients.

  • Performs all duties in accordance with hospital medical policies and procedures.

  • Prepares and maintains the exam rooms and treatment areas or vehicles.

  • Performs physical examinations; records observations on patients.

  • Assists the doctor in medical and surgical procedure

  • Administers injections and administers oral medications in accordance with hospital policy.

  • Performs emergency procedures such as control of bleeding, resuscitation with oxygen, opening airways, and external cardiac massage.

  • Assists in restraining patients when necessary.

  • Performs clinical laboratory procedures; maintains file of lab test results and ensures that test results are recorded in patient records.

  • Takes radiographs and administers EKGs and EEGs.

  • Admits and discharges patients on the doctor's orders.

  • Counsels clients on various aspects of animal care

  • Understands the usage and dosage of all prescription drugs

  • Maintains an appropriate inventory of all medical supplies as determined by the inventory control system.

  • Assists other staff members as required.

  • Understands and carries out oral and written directions.

  • Maintains positive, cooperative relationships with other employees.

  • Promotes and utilizes a patient-centered approach within the department.

  • Ensures duties are completed satisfactorily by the conclusion of their designated shift

  • Follows all MASH Policies and Procedures

  • Possesses excellent medical staff and clinical relationship development skills.

  • In attendance at required meetings necessary for job functionality and participates as an active member of the department.

  • Performs patient treatments and procedures as prescribed.

  • Maintains RVT Licensure

  • Performs all legal duties outlined by the California Veterinary Medical Board

  • Performs other responsibilities as requested by the Department Manager.

  • Requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds continuously.

  • Requires the employee to bend, squat, kneel and reach above shoulder level frequently. Climb and twist occasionally.

  • Requires repetitive use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulation

  • Requires all sensory skills (speech, vision, smell, touch, and hearing) corrected to the near-normal range.

  • Environment:

  • Greater than 90% of time spent indoors.

  • Temperature and humidity fluctuations indoors.

  • Exposure to cleaning agents.

  • Exposure to high-stress levels.

  • Exposure to electrical currents.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Registered Veterinary Technician in the State of California

  • Experience and understanding of the field.

  • Adapts positively to the ever-changing healthcare environment by supporting technology and process changes.

  • Ability to empathize with others and demonstrate a values-based work style is required.

  • Must possess excellent listening, interpersonal skills, and problem-solving methods.

  • The base hourly range for this position is $25-$35. Our pay ranges are primarily determined by role, level, and location. The range provided for each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for the position. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
