The University of Iowa Health Care department of Rehabilitation Therapies is seeking a staff Educator to plan and implement academic and therapeutic instruction and document student progress. This position entails working on an inpatient psychiatric unit with children and adolescent patients with a mental health diagnosis.
Provide quality patient care as a certified teacher including standardized assessment, lesson preparation, individual and small group academic instruction, and therapeutic instruction
Record data on the status and progress of patients every day they participate in educational activities and on transactions with their community schools, parents, and professionals
Exhibit a commitment to quality/process improvement
Perform routine and assigned administrative tasks efficiently
Demonstrate a practical yet innovative approach to solving problems

Type of Position: Regular full-time position during academic school year. Employee is placed on leave of absence for the summer; however, some hours are required during the summer to cover staffing needs.

Required Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree in Education or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
1 - 3 years of teaching experience
Experience with students with challenging behavior in a school setting or similar work environment
Experience teaching social-emotional curriculum
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Special Education Certification/ Endorsement in behavior disorders or a related field such as learning disorder, early child special education, or intellectual disabilities
Licenses/Certifications
Desirable Qualifications
Master's degree in Education
Instructional Strategist Certification
Teaching experience in special education
Teaching experience at middle and high school level with challenging behaviors
Ability to effectively and expeditiously communicate with patient's local schools to collect information on students' performance in school and to offer suggestions on how to best support students when they return to their school
