San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC) is seeking qualified Clinical Psychologists with expertise in Integrated Behavioral Health. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish is preferred but not required for these positions.

We are seeking licensed professionals, proficient in brief, evidence-based models of psychotherapeutic interventions with adult and older adult populations, to work at our main hospital location in San Mateo. The positions involve being a mental health clinician, coordinating and conducting psychotherapy for clinic patients, and working as part of an integrated team alongside primary care physicians, psychiatrists, and other medical professionals.

Licensed Psychologists fulfill the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Assess, evaluate, and provide psychological treatment to adult San Mateo County residents with acute or chronic psychiatric illness both inpatient and outpatient.

  • Participate in multi-disciplinary teams to develop, implement, coordinate, and evaluate mental health treatment plans for a broad range of behavioral and psychosocial concerns.

  • Employ a variety of empirically-validated approaches as indicated by specific presenting problems to change behaviors, achieve symptom relief, and improve functioning.

  • Develop and conduct group psychotherapy, psychoeducational programs, and classes.

  • Create, implement, and evaluate behavioral medicine and health psychology programs in a variety of settings, with an emphasis on diabetes care, obesity, and health-risk behaviors.

  • Render consultation to primary care and specialty providers on matters relating to mental health, health psychology, and behavioral medicine.

  • Offer crisis intervention, when needed.

  • Maintain accurate and current notes in the electronic health records and inpatient medical records, and produce reports of evaluation and/or treatment, as required.

  • Conduct applied research and clinical investigations in behavioral/health psychology.

  • Provide liaison services between patients and other providers, as needed.

  • Supervise psychology and other mental health trainees.

In addition to the license requirements specified below, the selected candidates will possess qualifications that include:

  • Expertise in empirically-validated psychological interventions for both individual and group therapy pertaining to a broad range of behavioral and psychosocial issues.

  • Familiarity with psychological interventions related to preventative care and behavioral medicine, in particular related to diabetic care models, obesity, and health-risk behaviors.

  • Previous clinical responsibilities to include psychological testing, diagnosis, crisis intervention, as well as brief individual and group psychotherapy.

  • Qualified to supervise psychology trainees.

  • Knowledge of social service agencies, state regulations, and APA standards as they relate to client treatment, patient rights, and client/patient confidentiality.

  • Knowledge of psychological testing techniques, administration, and interpretation.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to provide culturally-sensitive, Spanish language psychological services to a low-income, underprivileged population (for the Bilingual Spanish Psychologist).

The ideal candidate will also have a doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from a regionally accredited educational institution and must have completed the required trainings related to providing clinical supervision. Possession of a California license in Clinical Psychology is required for this position, however candidates who have passed the EPPP exam and are in the process of receiving a California license in Clinical Psychology within a 90-day period may be considered in this recruitment but will not be able to start the position until license is obtained. Starting salary is negotiable, depending on experience, and includes a biweekly bilingual differential pay added to the hourly base pay, for bilingual Spanish positions. The incumbent will work with adult and/or older adult populations(Option 1), as described below.

Option 1:Adult: Providing direct and preventive mental health services to adults and the various professionals, agencies and institutions serving the adult population.

Qualifications

Licensure/Certification:California license in Clinical Psychology.

Education and Experience:Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

Option 1: Adult -Two years of clinical experience with adults.

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, methods, techniques, material, devices used and current developments in the field of specialization.

  • Standard methods, techniques, materials and devices used in either clinical psychology, community, developmental psychology and psychological research.

  • Psychotherapeutic factors relevant to emotional, behavioral, learning, social interaction or social systems problems.

  • Techniques of mental health consultation, psychological research and training.

  • Various psychological tests available.

  • Standard methods of test evaluation and test results interpretations.

  • Approved techniques of therapeutic counseling.

Skill/Ability to:

  • Identify the relevant factors related to emotional, behavioral, learning, social interaction or social systems problems and to select and apply appropriate remedial or consultation techniques and procedures.

  • Analyze, interpret and apply the principles, methods, techniques, material and devices used in clinical, child, adult, forensic or developmental psychology depending upon the option.

  • Identify the relevant factors related to emotional, behavioral, learning, social interaction or social systems problems.

  • Select and apply appropriate remedial or clinical techniques and procedures.

  • Diagnosis and treatment of emotional, learning and social interaction problems.

  • Consider applicability of innovative treatment or consultation procedures to work problems and experiment with and evaluate the applicability of innovative treatment or consultation procedures to work problems.

  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.

  • Maintain records and prepare reports.

  • Supervise the work of trainees and junior staff members.

  • Establish and maintain objectives and cooperative relationships with clients, other professionals and the public.

  • Speak and write effectively.

Anyone may apply.Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court of California employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, Confidential and Management extra-help/limited term, and SEIU or AFSCME represented extra help/limited term positions prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination.

The examination process will consist of an application screening (weight: pass/fail) based on the candidates' application and responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview (weight: 100%). Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification.All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
