Western MA Hospital (WMH) operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking caring, dynamic, and responsive applicants to provide an exceptional patient care experience that promotes healing and recovery in a compassionate public health hospital environment.
Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) perform a vital role by being patient-centered and building trust with our patient population by assisting with a variety of professional nursing care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). The selected candidate will perform a variety of direct patient care such as preparing and administering medications; taking and charting vital signs; collecting and analyzing specimens for diagnostic purposes and changing dressings; administering and monitoring oxygen therapy; suctioning; monitoring fluid intake and output; and other nursing procedures as assigned in order to ensure the wellbeing and comfort of patients.
The ideal candidate will have one (1) year of experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse and will combine the knowledge, clinical skills, and judgment necessary to perform all nursing procedures as outlined in the scope of practice.
Please Note: This position is 40 hours per week, 11:15 PM - 7:15 AM shift and will share weekend/holiday coverage and other shifts as operationally needed.
Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
Records and reports to charge nurse information such as vital signs, medications, treatment outcome, general observations, etc., according to unit policy to ensure quality and continuity of patient care.
Provides for the daily care and personal needs of patients by giving baths, backrubs, feedings/tube feedings, grooming, positioning, transferring, transporting, and toileting.
Assumes charge responsibility for a unit when assigned.
Prepares equipment and assists the physician or registered nurse during patient treatments and examinations.
Instructs patient and/or families' activities of daily living and provides other educational instruction as ordered to promote patient independence and wellness.
Participates in patient care conferences, staff meetings, and quality assurance activities, etc., to share information and make recommendations regarding patient rehabilitation and treatment plans.
Assists with orientation of new employees and volunteers by demonstrating nursing care procedures and providing information regarding hospital and unit policies to prepare them to work independently.
Performs LPN duties with others in a cooperative, confidential, and professional manner to facilitate proper communication of patient care.
Provides schedule rotation on days, evenings, nights, and other clinical units as necessary to ensure patient safety on all units and shifts.
Performs related duties as assigned such as maintaining and updating records and files; participates in education conferences, training and development programs.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of nursing.
Familiarity with custodial care problems (personal hygiene, feeding, grooming, and dressing) of special client groups such as the blind, the hearing impaired and the handicapped.
Understanding of the terminology, symbols and standard abbreviations used in medical practice.
Demonstrated ability to understand written/oral instructions and work as a team member.
Skilled in empathizing with patients and communicating effectively.
Ability to display sensitivity and respect regarding a patients' cultural and religious preferences/needs.
Capacity to interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress
Demonstrated competency appropriate to the age of patients served.
Capacity to establish effective relationships with individuals, families, visitors, and medical staff.
Skilled in demonstrating situational awareness, compassion, and attention to detail with readiness to respond appropriately when needed.
Talent for assisting and working with people of diverse backgrounds.
Skilled in the ability to provide supervision, guidance, and instruction, including assigning and reviewing work, monitoring progress, and evaluating performance.
Collaborative with a wide variety of staff demonstrating personal initiative as well as the ability to work well in a team setting.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must have at least one year of paraprofessional experience in the field of nursing as a licensed practical nurse.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a current and valid license as a practical nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
