Job Duties

Up to a $17,500 Bonus for Registered Nurses that are new to state service and remain with the facility for 2 years.

  • $10,000 sign on bonus will be awarded to new hires to state service with a one-year written agreement required.

  • An additional $7,500 retention bonus will be awarded to new hires. The retention bonus will be paid out one year after hire date and require a one-year written agreement.

Above bouses are available to Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) that are new to DBHDS or have not worked for at least one year for Department of Behavior Health Developmental Services (DBHDS).

Western State Hospital is seeking LPN for 1st, and 2nd shifts. LPN are scheduled to work (2) 12-hour shifts and (2) 8-hour shifts or (5) 8-hour shift per week and every other weekend.

We seek fresh graduates and experienced individuals as full-time Licensed Practical Nurse professionals on 1st and 2nd shift to join our team on rotating shifts, with holiday and weekend schedules required. The LPN provides quality nursing care to psychiatric and geriatric patients based on standards of nursing practice and care within the scope of license. Performs skilled patient centered nursing care to individual and groups of patients with complex mental and physical illnesses under the general supervision of a registered nurse. Provides a variety of patient care such as administering medication and treatments, maintaining patient records, promoting health and wellness education, and communicating for continuity of patient care. Ability to communicate effectively to convey necessary information. Ability to observe gauges, dials or other indicator to make sure equipment is working properly.

Paid Shift Differential:

1st shift weekend $3.00/hr. on weekends and holidays

2nd shift $3.50/hr., weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications

  • LPN licensure or eligible for licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

  • Current, Virginia license to practice as a LPN or license eligible; multi-state compact endorsement is accepted.

  • Knowledge of illness and treatment modalities to include medication administration.

  • Ability to implement nursing care plan and provide guidance to other staff.

  • Ability to delegate and supervise nursing staff. Effective communication (written, verbal and sign).

  • Ability to participate in interdisciplinary team. Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care.

  • Ability to work overtime due to staffing emergencies in a 24 hour 7 day per week psychiatric hospital which at times may mean working a 16-hour shift if and when necessary.

  • Complete all annual competency training to include TOVA III with physical restraints

  • Complete and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers with the American Heart Association

  • Demonstrates knowledge of recovery/trauma informed care.
