ABOUT THE POSITION AND OUR AGENCY

The City of Carpinteria is recruiting a part-time Library Technician.

This recruitment is open to fill one (1) part-time Library Technician vacancy and to establish an eligibility list for future vacancies. The current vacancy is for an assignment working an average of 18 hours per week to include: Mondays and Wendesdays 9 am - 2 pm, some Saturdays, and additional hours to be arranged with the employee.

The ideal candidate would be a self-starter who thrives when working effectively both independently and as part of a dynamic team; stays current in library programming and technology; and continues to build library skills through professional development.

Summary of duties: Performs a wide variety of journey level technical library work including acquiring, cataloging and circulating materials for a specific function of the library. Performs technical and clerical work in support of various sections of the library; leads programs; and provides general information and assistance to library patrons.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES

Typically, the depth and breadth of duties/assignments increase at each level and may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provides excellent customer and informational services, including readers' advisory, reference, and account services.

  • Responds to requests that are in person, over the phone, via email, chat, or other online methods in order to answer questions, locate information, and/or train the public in using the library's resources. Refers questions to a Librarian when appropriate.

  • Supports patrons with technology, including the public Wi-Fi, computers, Library offered learning platforms, copier, and other equipment.

  • Assists, prepares, and/or implements programs and/or outreach activities for a variety of communities and cultural groups of all ages.

  • Supports collection development; may assist with selection, weeding, and replacement of materials in the collection.

  • Processes new Library materials and enters records into the Library catalog.

  • Sorts and shelves books and other materials according to their categorization, when needed.

  • Researches and retrieves information; prepares, updates, and generates reports. Maintains tracking documents. Maintains statistical records and data.

  • Assists with special projects which may include formatting presentations; training of peers, interns, patrons and/or volunteers; participating on committees and/or updating content on webpages.

  • Assists with general maintenance, appearance, and safety of Library facilities. Performs basic troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment. Initiates requests for equipment maintenance when necessary.

  • Assists with monitoring of patron behavior and ensuring positive interactions among patrons and staff.

  • Participate in the promotion of library services and resources; assist in giving library tours to groups; assist in the preparation of informational handouts for public distribution including calendars and flyers.

  • Coordinate the scheduling of library facilities.

  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The following are minimum qualifications necessary for entry into the classification:

Education and/or Experience:

Any combination of education or experience which demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs). Possession of the required KSAs may typically be demonstrated by:

An Associate of Arts degree in Library Technology OR successful completion of two (2) years of college coursework and one (1) year of experience involving public contact OR successful completion of three (3) years of college coursework OR three (3) years of increasingly responsible clerical experience involving public contact or library services.

License, Certification and Other Requirements:

All licenses and certificates must be maintained as a condition of employment.

  • A valid appropriate California driver's license may be required.

  • Maintain a satisfactory driving record.

  • Bilingual Spanish/English speaking skills may be required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA's)

  • Promote a culture of teamwork and communication by working in collaboration, treating everyone with respect and dignity and maintaining an open mind to diverse voices and ideas.

  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

  • Principles and practices of storytelling.

  • Principles and practices of outreach services.

  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.

  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; provide good customer service; perform routine clerical work; learn office methods, rules, and policies.

  • Perform a variety of library support services related to patron assistance.

  • Operate and/or instruct on the use of library equipment (e.g., computer terminals, laptops, copier, and smart TV).

  • Interpret and execute written and verbal instructions; and solve problems and develop methods for implementing solutions.

  • Physical ability to move around the library to help patrons and staff members and to lift and move books in loads weighing up to 30 pounds.

Supplemental Information:

May be required to work evenings, Saturdays and/or Sundays.
