The Wichita Public Library has an immediate opening for an energetic, service-minded Library Resource Officer. The Library Resource Officer will provide operational oversight related to the safety and security of library customers, staff, and building assets for the Wichita Public Library system. This includes being trauma-informed and community service oriented. Success in this position looks like awareness of public library services, management of customer user of library spaces, and customer referrals to community partners whose services can assist with access to housing, healthcare, and social services.

This position reports to the Support Services Division Manager and is responsible for the daily oversight of spaces and providing necessary support to staffat the Advanced Learning Library to provide a safe, inclusive, and secure community space, for both customers and staff. In addition to managing spaces and use at the Advanced Learning Library, this employee will provide training for safety and security specific to public library environment to support staff across all branch locations. This position requires a people-first orientation, recognizing the wide range of needs of customers and adapts approaches to nonconfrontationally correct and de-escalate customer behavior. This position will proactively engage with customers who appear to be struggling with any number of barriers and will encourage connections with area partners who can further assist.

Starting Salary Range: $21.40 - $25.43 depending on experience and qualifications

This is a part-time (NO BENEFITS) position working the days and hours:

Saturday 9:45am

  • 6:15pm and Sunday 12:45pm

  • 5:15pm

Bargaining Unit: No Union Representation

Examples of Work Performed

  • Acts as a public service resource by engaging with library customers to provide day to day behavior support.

  • Serves as primary role for monitoring and addressing the safety and security of library spaces are used and ensures the overall customer experience supports the Library's mission.

  • Exercises good judgment and can physically handle unruly individuals.

  • Acts as a service resource by engaging with library customers to provide day to day support for the effective use of the library by everyone who visits.

  • Ensures Library and City safety policies, procedures and practices are enacted.

  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with all customers who use the library.

  • Identifies and engages with individuals who may benefit from social service support through outreach, direct observation, or referral by Library staff.

  • May develop, coordinate, deliver, and evaluate departmental public and staff programs and trainings as appropriate to ensure safety and security knowledge is up to date.

  • Completes incident reports and oversees an incident management database.

  • Routinely consults with branch staff and provides tools and resources that assist them with safety and security confidence (e.g., responds to and trouble-shoots questions, provides routine communications across the department, identifies training or program opportunities, etc.).

  • Provides services to internal customers in person, on the phone, and online; primary external customer service will be in person.

  • Brings matters of public concern regarding waste, inefficiency, corruption, discrimination, and safety to the attention of managers.

  • Accurately communicates the library's policies to members of the public in all job-related contacts.

  • Positively reflects Wichita Public Library's mission, vision, and values to members of the public and to staff.

  • Performance of duties may require the use of a vehicle.

Requirements of Work

  • Knowledge of principles and techniques related to threat/risk assessments, safety and security operations.

  • Completion of required training at the Law Enforcement Training Center.

  • Understanding of trauma-informed service approach and adapts approaches based on this knowledge.

  • Embodies inclusion in all aspects of service.

  • Use initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.

  • Thorough knowledge of community resources and effective referral practices.

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with a variety of individuals contacted in the course of the work.

  • Ability to prepare reports, statistics, and documentation; ability to use a computer to access, interpret and record information.

  • Ability to be firm, professional, and courteous with the public.

  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively to determine the proper action.

  • May require the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally, in writing, and/or by whatever creative means are necessary to cross communication barriers.

  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

  • Ability to monitor facilities on foot.

  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.

  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid security license within 3 months of employment.

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

  • Ability to demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of serving diverse communities, interacting and communicating successfully with people from a variety of backgrounds both individually and in groups.

  • Ability to coordinate and collaborate with multiple departments, partners, and work teams.

  • Working knowledge of related policies, legislation and statutes pertaining to library use and criminal code.

Required Experience and Training

  • Must be 21 years of age at time of application.

  • High School completion plus two years' experience in providing direct customer service to at-risk, marginalized individuals, customer service, experience in security, or experience in social work.

  • Must have a valid driver's license.

  • A valid Security License is preferred upon hire but required after 3 months of employment.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.

  • Attainment of passing scores on pre-employment tests.

Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal records check.
