POSITION SUMMARY

POSITION SUMMARY:

An employee in this role exhibits outstanding customer service skills while executing the standard tasks linked with Library operations, encompassing circulation, youth and adult programs, as well as reference and general patron services. This work is conducted under the training and overall supervision of the Harnett County Public Library Director. The employee is expected to work a maximum of 29 hours per weekly, spanning shifts at the Boone Trail Library, Anderson Creek Public Library, and Harnett County Main Branch.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

Oversees library operations and Services of the Anderson Creek and Boone Trail Public Libraries including the following duties:

  • Develops and manages library programming for children and adults.

  • Plans, selects and coordinates collection development and evaluates and maintains the collection of library books and materials within budget constraints to meet patron's needs and expectations.

  • Works closely with Parks and Recreation manager and Anderson Creek Primary School administration to manage library programs and services that align with community needs and educational objectives.

  • Gathers and maintains financial reports and deposits of all monetary library transactions.

  • Ensures library facilities, grounds and all equipment are in good and safe working order; remains alert and aware of potential problem situations developing within the building or grounds.

  • Assists patrons in the use of the library's automated system and general computer software, internet usage and electronic devices.

  • Promotes community image of libraries and public awareness of library services through businesses, schools and groups, public information programs, outreach programs, displays, and public presentations.

  • Develops partnerships with area public and private organizations.

  • Represents the interests of the libraries to the community, and other governmental and professional organizations.

  • Effectively utilizes budget allocations for various segments of expenditures such as supplies, equipment, and collection development.

  • Performs circulation duties including: registering new patrons, checking items in and out, performing basic financial transactions, reserving library materials for patrons, searching the online catalog, updating and managing patron accounts, and troubleshooting minor problems with patron accounts.

  • Sorts books, publications, and other items according to established procedures and returns them to their proper shelf locations or other designated areas.

  • Efficiently locates library materials for patrons including books, periodicals, DVDS, and audiobooks.

  • Instructs patrons on how to access and utilize a variety of online and digital materials. Shares knowledge of the library's e-book collection and points of access for online reading.

  • Inspects returned books for circulating condition; identifies and notes various repair needs.

  • Assists patrons with various office equipment including fax, copier, and computer.

Collaborates with Harnett County Library leadership to develop the overall vision, goals and objectives of the library, integrating the ideas of the public, staff, and Harnett County Library Board.

Ensures adherence to the department's policies, procedures, safety rules and regulations.

Conducts regular travel between multiple library locations, utilizing safe and efficient driving practices to ensure timely delivery of services and resources as needed.

Performs other related duties as required including some shift work at the Harnett County Main Branch Library.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university

  • Two years of public library experience

  • Experience with library programming with youth and/or adults

  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license

Applicants with a combination of relevant education and work experience will be considered.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of general computer technology, trends and applications.

  • Knowledge of the methods and practices of public library operations, including circulation, reference services, children's and adult services, and programming.

  • Skill in providing quality customer service to patrons.

  • Ability to comprehend, interpret and apply regulations, procedures and related information.

  • Ability to plan and implement creative programming for children and teens.

  • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of office equipment as necessary in the performance of daily activities.

  • Ability to use independent judgment in performing routine and non-routine tasks.

  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.

  • Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to perform light work frequently exerting up to 10 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects; and occasionally requiring to exert up to 50 pounds of force to move objects. This work also involves the physical abilities of crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, discriminating among sounds, kneeling, lifting, having manual dexterity, using mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, speaking, standing, stooping, expressing ideas by the spoken word, and walking. An incumbent must also possess the visual acuity to analyze data, work with color or depth perception, determine accuracy, and works with computer.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The employee works in a library environment. Job duties require working an assigned schedule which could be a combination of mornings, afternoons, and evening work as well as weekends in addition to working at various locations such as the main branch in Lillington and other branch libraries.
