LIBRARY MEDIA TECHNICIAN

DEFINITION

Under the supervision of the principal, assistant principal, or librarian, to perform responsible clerical and para-professional library work.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Inspects incoming shipments of library material for conformance with orders; process material for circulation; assist principal, assistant principal, or librarian in training new employees, train and supervise students, assist and supervise in all circulation functions, assist staff and students in the location and use of library materials (both print and electronic sources); maintain maintenance and shelving of materials; catalog library materials; load software and maintain software upgrades; maintain printers on network; set up of CD-ROM programs; assists students with basic commands for computer applications and CD; troubleshoot minor network and printer problems; facilitate internet access for students and staff; assist in supervision of students before and after school, during lunch and class periods, print, distribute, generate bills, overdue/fine notices, collect and record fines, troubleshoot problems, and at the high school assume responsibility for daily library operation when librarian is not present.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Dewey Decimal Systems of classification, media software, hardware and computer capabilities and peripherals; modern office and library clerical procedures, proficiency in use of Macintosh and PC computer applications.

Ability to:

Perform responsible library work involving independent judgment; understand and follow oral and written directions; establish and maintain cooperative working relations with students and staff; maintain proper library environment; maintain a positive attitude, focus and flexibility while performing multiple library assignments; react in a positive manner to unexpected demands and needs of staff and students.

Experience

At least one year of library/media center experience, including work with automated library system; experience in utilizing microcomputers in an instructional setting.

Education:

Have completed, be enrolled in or enroll in college level courses in library services and technology; computer technology, and other related courses.

Desirable qualifications:

Ability to coordinate Accelerated Reader Program.

Ability to coordinate STAR computerized reading assessment program.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS Positions in this class are distinguished from positions in the class of Custodian by the daytime assignment of complete responsibility for the care and cleaning problems of the High School. The incumbent is usually the only custodial worker during the day, however, at times may be required to exercise supervision over incumbents in the class of Custodian and substitute Custodian on an overlapping shift. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Confers with the Principal, Plant Manager and Night Lead Man Custodian regarding problems relating to the care and cleaning of the school plant campus; inspects and maintains a level of cleanliness according to predetermined standards; reports needed repair work to proper authorities as appropriate; participate in setting up classrooms, cafeterias and auditoriums for special events; makes minor non-technical repairs and adjustments to plant campus equipment, furniture and fixtures; sweeps, cleans, mops and waxes floors and hallways; sweeps and dusts offices; picks up papers and sweeps sidewalks; requisitions needed custodial material, supplies, and equipment; performs special custodial work as requested; participates in the major cleaning of the plant campus during the summer months; inspects work in progress and upon completion; raises and lowers flags; keeps simple records; operates and adjusts heating and ventilating equipment; replaces broken windows. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS LICENSE REQUIRED Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License. Knowledge of: Methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work; requirements for the safe maintenance of school facilities; maintaining maintenance of school buildings to keep them in a safe, clean and orderly condition. Ability to: Interact with District work-order system; Rread and understand directions in use of for using chemicals and solutions; use cleaning materials, equipment and methods according to predetermined standards; estimate quantity and types of materials and supplies needed; make minor non-technical repairs; operate heating and ventilating equipment; keep records and prepare reports; supervise the work of custodial personnel; understand and carry out oral and written directions; perform moderately heavy manual labor; develop and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Experience: Two years of experience in school custodial work or one year of experience at or equivalent to the level of Custodian with the El Rancho Unified School District.
