Under limited supervision, serves as the supervisor of Marketing and Community Relations for the library. Responsible for researching, planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating marketing and community relations for the library and ensures that all services are in alignment with the library and city's strategic goals. Work involves interacting and fostering relationships with the media, other city departments, and outside community partners. Responsible for supervising the "brand" and image of the library by overseeing the creation of professional graphics and other imagery such as flyers, publications and other literature to promote classes, events, and the library overall. Coordinates the creation and delivery of all marketing materials within a dynamic and fast paced timeline while organizing and monitoring projects and deadlines.  Manages all library social media accounts and website development. Researches and incorporates emerging technology trends to predict the marketing needs of the library. Reports to the Director of Libraries.

  • Manages, implements, and supervises the operations for Marketing and Community Relations for the Suffolk Public Library.

  • Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates subordinate staff in the work to be performed and ensures compliance with library policies and procedures.

  • Manages the library's various social media accounts and development of the website.

  • Develops training for staff.

  • Coordinates with media companies and other resources to obtain cost effective advertising.

  • Coordinates and participates in special events and initiatives of all sizes.

  • Performs administrative duties such as preparing and analyzing statistical reports, performing outreach to staff, monitoring discretionary spending of a budget, and delivering trainings and classes as needed.

  • Prepares statistical and financial reports for the various social media platforms, website, and other tools.  Prepares and produces financial/budgetary reports monthly.

  • Designs, develops, and delivers employee training and development programs through a variety of formats including e-learning, instructor-led classes, and other performance aids; coordinates and oversees the design, development and delivery of such programs/services by library staff.

  • Identify marketing needs, recommending and implementing solutions, and evaluating and measuring effectiveness.

  • Identifies local, regional, and national marketing opportunities and coordinates the Suffolk Public Library's participation.

  • Maintain current knowledge of trends, policies, methods and technologies in the marketing and community relations field.

  • Implement changes when appropriate.

  • Coaches and supports employees with developing their skills and improving job performance.

  • Researches and implements new marketing strategies to ensure the library's efforts are not only current, but also looking towards the future.

  • Assesses the success of campaigns, initiatives, tools, resources, and platforms to determine effectiveness to meet strategic goals.

  • Performs tasks at the circulation desk of the library including checking library materials in and out, preparing books to be shelved, registering and processing library cards, collecting materials for the book depository, and securing the library at the end of the business day.

  • Directs, advises, provides, assists, and instructs patrons with locating library materials, answering reference and directional questions, and placing reserve requests.

  • Receives, reviews, and responds to patron complaints.

  • Monitor and evaluate library public services, facilities and staff in the absence of Library Management.

  • May lead, facilitate, and participate in City and department teams to develop strategic plans, resolve problems, and improve current processes.

  • Participates in the Library Supervisor Team to set strategic directions, evaluate policies and procedures, develop new programs, services and initiatives and communicate important information and changes with staff.

  • Performs related work as required.

Bachelor's degree in marketing, mass communications, community relations, or a related field, and 3 to 5 years of experience in graphic design, marketing, community relations, or a related field including 1 to 2 years of administrative/supervisory responsibilities; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.  Requires a valid driver's license.

  • Knowledge of library routine and procedures. Has considerable knowledge of specialized area assigned of marketing, graphic design, and community relations.

  • Knowledge of a variety of marketing and graphic design tools and resource.

  • Knowledge of the requirements, policies, and procedures of various media outlets necessary for promotional activities.

  • Knowledge of the methods and procedures of the advertising industry

  • Knowledge of the current literature, trends, and developments in the public relations field. Is skilled in written composition.

  • Ability to use popular computer-driven word processing, spreadsheet, file maintenance programs.

  • Ability to develop and maintain high visibility and good relations with department personnel, City officials, employees, media representatives and community groups.

  • Ability to conceive, organize and implement programs to promote the City and its programs and activities.

  • Ability to use standard office machines and a variety of popular audio visual and computer equipment.

  • Ability to maintain clerical records.

  • Ability to follow established procedures and perform work requiring some detail.

  • Ability to instruct patrons in the use of various office machines, computer programs and library reference materials.

  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with library patrons and the general public.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

  • Ability to effectively express ideas orally and in writing. Is able to exercise tact and courtesy in frequent contact with City employees, City officials, professionals, and the general public.

  • Ability to plan work and develop procedures; to learn and/or evaluate complex information in order to make judgments and decisions.

  • Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including legal and municipal terminology.

  • Ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages.

  • Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

  • Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with (persons acting under stress) (emergency situations).
