Under general supervision, performs daily work assignments for the Library Division of the Community Services Department in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; 

  • One (1) year of experience performing basic maintenance of a facility;

  • One (1) year performing custodial services; 

  • Valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain within sixty (60) days, with a driving record acceptable to the City of Alamogordo; or

  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • Responsible for performing maintenance and upkeep of the Library facility indoors and out;

  • Performs general custodial duties, including shampooing/vacuuming carpets, buffing, waxing and mopping floors. Sanitizing restrooms, cleaning and dusting windows, doors, and furniture, and cleaning and polishing drinking fountains, stainless steel compartments, and sinks;

  • Inspect all areas of the library to ensure it is free of debris, floors are dry, walkways are clear, etc., prior to patron entry;  

  • Maintains inventory of supplies and re-orders as necessary; including tidy and safe storage of cleaning and maintenance supplies;

  • Performs facility maintenance duties that may include patching, repairing, and repainting walls and doors. Reporting and coordinating major maintenance/repair     needs;

  • Prepares meeting rooms for meetings and programs by assembling, installing,  and setting up of tables, chairs, and other furniture as necessary;

  • Opens and secures buildings, puts up and takes down the flag, cleans ashtrays (outside), and discards cigarette butts and waste;

  • Dismantles and reconstructs book stacks;

  • Shovels snow and ice from entrances during winter;

  • Performs grounds-keeping duties, including cleaning, removing debris from rain gutters, and removing trash and broken limbs from Library grounds;

  • Promptly reports malfunctions of bathroom fixtures, light fixtures, and/or damages to inside or outside of the building to the Library Manager;

  • Contributes to a high-quality work culture through participation in training and mentoring to develop skills, including safety-related training and skills;

  • Interacts professionally and provides excellent customer service to all levels of City staff and citizens to ensure high operational and service standards; and

  • Performs duties in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.

OTHER IMPORTANT DUTIES

  • May assist Library Staff with loading and unloading books from patron vehicles, delivering books to storage room, picking up donations from home-bound patrons, and running library errands as assigned; 

  • Will work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays;

  • Maintain the confidentiality of information obtained during the performance of duties and;

  • Performs such other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Building maintenance techniques, including repair procedures and proper, safe use of chemicals and tools;

  • General cleaning and sanitation techniques in a public facility; and

  • Safe operation of custodial equipment.

Skill/Ability to:

  •  Demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication; understand and follow instructions;

  •  Perform tasks and other daily activities in a positive and professional manner alongside employees of varied backgrounds and personalities;

  •  Attend work, as scheduled and on a regular basis, to effectively perform the position's essential duties and responsibilities;

  • Exercise common sense and good judgment in the performance of essential duties;

  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions;

  • Tolerate outside working conditions, including exposure to adverse weather conditions;

  • Safely operate and maintain custodial and landscaping equipment;

  • Maintain and enhance the Library's commitment to customer service excellence.

  • Work will be performed both indoors and outdoors;

  • Outside weather conditions will vary and include heat, cold, rain, snow, etc.;

  • Position requires the use of various hand and power tools;

  • Risk of physical injury and exposure to hazardous chemicals, toxins, and pathogens;

  • The noise level in the work area may be moderately noisy;

  • Frequently works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places;

  •  Lift and/or move items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds; the lifting of any objects greater than fifty (50) pounds by a single individual is prohibited. Lifting objects,     materials, or equipment weighing more than fifty (50) pounds requires the buddy system or the use of devices designed to assist with lifting or moving. Proper lifting techniques shall be used when lifting items of any weight;

  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate for job assignments;

  • Position required to wear protective footwear, clearly marked by the manufacturer, with a minimum standard of M/F I/75/C/75 per ASTM F2413-11; and

  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
