Position Summary

The University at Buffalo Libraries are seeking a skilled Library Developer to implement, customize, and enhance digital asset management systems and software solutions within the library environment. This position will play a crucial role in ensuring system quality assurance, identifying defects, and exploring integration opportunities for enhanced functionality. Collaboration and communication skills are essential, as you will work closely with cross-functional teams to align system goals with library objectives and provide regular updates on system progress and enhancements.

Primary duties will include:

  • Leading the implementation of the digital asset management system, ensuring alignment with library standards.

  • Designing, developing, testing, and deploying software solutions for library management systems, including integrated library systems (ILS), applications, digital repositories, and discovery platforms.

  • Integrating library systems with third-party APIs, services, and external databases to enhance functionality and interoperability.

  • Developing intuitive, inclusive and user-friendly interfaces for users, ensuring accessibility and compliance with industry standards.

  • Creating comprehensive documentation and providing training for University Libraries faculty and staff on system functions and usage.

  • Implementing and maintaining robust security measures to protect library data and ensure compliance with regulations.

  • Providing technical expertise and support to users both on-site and remotely.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree: A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field and two years of relevant experience. A combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the education requirement.

Programming Skills: Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in software development, such as Java, Python, C++, or similar languages, is essential. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of software design principles, data structures, and algorithms.

Database Knowledge: Experience with relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) and proficiency in SQL query optimization are important for managing library data effectively.

Web Development Skills: Familiarity with web development frameworks (e.g., Django, Ruby on Rails) and front-end technologies (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript) is necessary for developing user interfaces and web-based library applications.

Analytical Skills: The ability to analyze requirements, identify problems, and propose effective solutions is crucial for developing software solutions tailored to the needs of library management.

Communication Skills: Strong communication skills are essential for collaborating with University Libraries faculty and staff, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to understand requirements, explain technical concepts, and provide support.

Attention to Detail: Attention to detail is necessary to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and security of library systems and data.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced Degree: Candidates with advanced degrees in Computer Science, Library and Information Science, or a related field may have an advantage, especially if they have specialized knowledge in library automation or information management.

Library Experience: Prior experience working in libraries or developing software solutions for libraries is preferred, as it demonstrates an understanding of library operations, cataloging practices, and user needs.

API Integration Experience: Experience integrating library systems with third-party APIs, services, or external databases can be advantageous for enhancing the functionality and interoperability of library software solutions.

Open Source Contributions: Candidates who have contributed to open-source projects related to library automation, digital repositories, or information management may be viewed favorably, as it demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning and collaboration within the library community.

Knowledge of Library Standards: Familiarity with library standards and protocols, such as MARC (Machine-Readable Cataloging) format, Z39.50 protocol, or Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), can be beneficial for developing interoperable library systems and adhering to industry best practices.

Physical Demands Salary Range $57,000 - $65,000 Additional Salary Information The salary range reflects our good faith and reasonable estimate of the possible compensation at the time of posting, the role and associated responsibilities, and the experience, education, and training of the selected candidate.
