The Opportunity:

Empowering our community to learn and create.

Our mission at Multnomah County Library is to empower our community to learn and create. Nowhere is this more evident than in our creative learning spaces. These spaces allow some of our most marginalized patrons opportunities to interact with creative technology which sparks new interests and builds new skills for a lifetime of learning.

As we move forward with renovating and rebuilding our library system, we're adding more creative learning spaces to give our patrons more opportunities to learn and create. That's why we're looking for a community focused leader to join us as our Creative Learning Supervisor!

In this role, you will supervise all programming and operations of makerspaces, audio-visual studios, and community focused creative learning spaces for the library, including supervising staff who are specifically focused on working in creative learning spaces. This includes directing and leading the work of staff who are experts on the development and operation of makerspace and other creative learning spaces and who are the primary drivers for the development of these spaces within the Multnomah County Library system. You will work with staff and other stakeholders to ensure the success of the makerspace and community programming and services which includes directly working the makerspaces and library locations at least 10 hours per week, and providing direct patron services within the creative learning spaces as needed.

You will also work in close collaboration and coordination with the Library Events & Reader Services (LERS) Manager and library and community stakeholders in a myriad of ways. In consultation with LERS Manager, the Systemwide Events & Reader Services (SERS) staff, the Library Director of Innovation and Technology, the Library Community Services Director, other library staff and community stakeholders, you will develop an annual plan, which includes vision, goals and objectives. In consultation with the Community Partnerships Manager, you will develop and manage partnerships with individuals and organizations to lead programming in the creative learning spaces. You will also collaborate with the library's Volunteer Manager to create and manage meaningful volunteering opportunities in our creative learning spaces. Additionally, you will work with senior library management and the Office of Project Management and Evaluation to conduct neighborhood analysis and needs assessments and develop and/or change services to meet community needs. You will have ultimate responsibility for evaluating services and programs and project and outcome development.

In addition, you will be responsible for:

  • Guiding, mentoring and encouraging the professional development of staff, ensuring excellent customer service to the community.

  • Preparing and submitting Library Foundation yearly reports and preparing timely responses to all Library Foundation queries about the program.

  • Monitoring and purchasing program supplies, software and equipment in consultation with key stakeholders.

  • Overseeing physical plant needs and requesting repairs and purchases to maintain a safe, attractive and efficient space.

  • Working with Library Learning and Organizational Development on safety training and safety checklists for program staff.

  • Representing the Library and providing outreach to a large and diverse community, focusing on promoting and sharing information about the program.

  • Engaging with the makerspace community and other service providers in Multnomah County to enhance the reputation of the Library by serving on appropriate local and national committees and organizations.

  • Supporting location programming and outreach plans in partnership with LERS staff and location services managers and staff.

  • Handling other duties as assigned.

The library is open and welcoming to all members of our community, including individuals who may be encountering hardships or challenges that affect their behavior and interactions. This position will serve as Person-in-Charge of a library location and requires someone with the ability to work respectfully and capably with people from all backgrounds and age groups. You must demonstrate a positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity and a sense of humor while working with customers, co-workers and community. In providing customer service, you may encounter situations that require de-escalation. Your ability to exercise quick and mature judgment in dealing with potentially disruptive, physically dangerous or abusive customers and emergencies is crucial.
