Library Clerk Hourly Pay: $15.00 per hour

Schedule:

Days: Monday

  • Saturday (rotating)

Hours: 9:00 A.M.

  • 6:00 P.M.

Definition: Under the general supervision of the Library Director, provide customer service to library patrons at the circulation desks and perform library tasks to prepare and process library materials.

Essential Functions: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may vary among positions, but may include the following tasks, knowledge, abilities, skills, and other characteristics. Tasks:

  • Assist patrons with library cards, computers, printers, and finding library materials in both physical and digital formats.

  • Answer phone calls, emails, and other electronic messages.

  • Recommend materials to patrons.

  • Check out/check in library materials.

  • Shelve books and library materials.

  • Perform shelf-reading to maintain neat and orderly shelves.

  • Process interlibrary loan (ILL) materials.

  • Process overdue notices.

  • Process cash and credit card transactions for library services and fees.

  • Maintain accurate records at the circulation desk for cash, credit, reference, ILL, computer use, meeting room use, etc.

  • Compile circulation reports for the Library Director and Library Board.

  • Mend library materials.

  • Process new materials including printing call number labels, attaching spine labels, and covering books.

  • Cross-train with other library assistants to ensure consistent coverage during leave time.

  • Assist with library programs and events to include preparing materials, setting up, assisting with the event, and cleaning up.

  • Perform other duties necessary for the efficient operation of the library under the direction of the Library Director or the Assistant Library Director.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred; high school diploma required.

  • Strong commitment to librarianship and public service.

  • Willingness to participate in ongoing professional development.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, content creation, and social media platforms.

Physical Functions:

  • Ability to move or lift objects weighing 40 pounds or more.

  • Must be able to sit up to two hours at one time and up to four hours total per workday.

  • Must be able to crouch and/or kneel for up to 10 times total per workday.

  • Must be able to work with arms bent for up to four hours at one time for up to four hours per day.

  • Must be able to use arms to push/pull with an estimated force of 5 pounds, up to 5 times total per day.

  • Must be able to walk for up to four hours at a time and up to eight hours per day.

  • Must be able to use hands and fingers to grasp and manipulate equipment and materials needed to perform essential job duties.

  • Must be able to coordinate use of hands and eyes in operation of various types of office equipment.

  • Carry files, written documents, or office supplies weight up to 10 pounds, up to one hour per day.

  • Speak to phone callers and professional staff.

  • Listen to phone calls and professional staff.

  • Crouch or bend as needed to file information in low file drawers or obtain office supplies from low shelves. Low drawers of shelves may be at floor level or two or three inches above floor level. This is done up to 15 minutes per day.

Working Conditions

  • Indoor temperature is controlled to maintain comfortable work environment year-round.

  • Floor has short pile carpet over concrete, without padding.

  • Worker primarily works alone with or without explicit directions from supervisor. Worker consults with one other individual or with small groups of individuals, either on the telephone or in person, on a regular basis.

  • Noise includes sound of personnel on a personal computer or talking on phone or with professional staff and customers.
