Future general salary increases include:

4% Increase effective July 2024

4% Increase effective July 2025

3% Increase effective July 2026

Position:

The Fullerton Public Library is seeking a dedicated and experienced Library Clerical Assistant.  The eligibility list established by this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancy as well as any future regular or nonregular vacancies.

Under varying levels of supervision performs a wide variety of library clerical duties of average difficulty, will assist the public in the use of library equipment, facilities, materials, and services, and performs related work as required.

THE CURRENT VACANCY IS A REGULAR/PART-TIME BENEFITED POSITION

Benefits are provided in accordance with Article 45 of the Fullerton Municipal Employees Federation Memorandum of Agreement.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is considered qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the necessary qualifications is as follows:

Graduation from high school

AND

One year of experience performing general clerical or library duties

English/Spanish or English/Korean bilingual abilities are preferred but not required.

Public library experience is preferred but not required.

The knowledge and abilities which are required to perform the duties and responsibilities of this class are as follows:

Knowledge of:

  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

  • Basic math as it relates to the area assigned.

  • Customer service, receptionist, and telephone techniques.

  • Basic library or office methods, functions, and practices.

  • Computer applications related to the area assigned.

AND

Ability to:

  • Perform clerical work of average difficulty.

  • Make basic mathematical calculations and read and sort numerals and letters rapidly and accurately.

  • Learn and apply Library policies and procedures.

  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with those encountered during work.

  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • Operate a personal computer and use applicable software.

  • Read and write at the level required for successful job performance.

  • Meet the public with courtesy and tact.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings, to accommodate City needs.

  • Must be able to type accurately at a speed that will enable successful job performance.

  • California Government Code §3100 - 3109 requires that all public employees are to be declared disaster service workers and shall take and subscribe to the related oath or affirmation as required.

  • Library Clerical Assistants assigned to Passport Acceptance must meet federal requirements to become a passport application agent.

Assessment Process:

Applicants must be specific and complete in describing their qualifications for the position.  BASED UPON THE INFORMATION PRESENTED ON THE APPLICATION MATERIALS, those applicants possessing the most suitable qualifications may be invited to a written examination, performance examination, oral interview, and/or other assessment instruments.

The City reserves the right to revise any portion of the examination process.  Candidates will be notified of any changes before a related examination step.

Candidates who successfully complete the assessment process for Library Clerical Assistant will be placed on an eligible list for this classification, which will remain in effect for at least one year or until an insufficient number of candidates remain on the list.

Current City of Fullerton employees may be given preference during the testing and/or selection process.

Appointment:

All employment offers, including appointment offers to City of Fullerton employees, are conditional based upon the successful completion of a background and medical examination performed by the City's designated physician, at City expense. Medical exams are administered to assess an individual's ability to perform the physical requirements of this position. In addition, City of Fullerton employees who are appointed to safety-sensitive classifications and all new hires will undergo a drug screen.

All new hires will be fingerprinted. Fingerprints are verified by the State of California Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

An appointee will serve a 12-month probationary period.
