General Summary

The preferred hiring range for this position is between $16.45 to $21.39 hourly.Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a full-time, non-exempt, position.   • The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement systemand does not participate in VRS; however, the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS and there are certain provisions that must be met. This position plans, organizes, publicizes, and conducts library programs and outreach for children and/or young adults and/or families, which may include but is not limited to the Summer Reading Program, family programs, and/or weekly story times. Provides reader advisory and reference services for patrons of all ages. Performs functions related to the circulation of library materials. Prepares displays and booklists. The individual must have a good rapport with children, young adults, and/or families.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Library Branch Manager.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Performs functions associated with circulating library materials including data entry.

  • Checking in/checking out and the shelving of library materials.

  • Plans, organizes, publicizes, and conducts library programs for children and/or young adults and/or families.

  • Completes forms and/or computer work for items missing, lost, damaged, weeded, de-new, having errors in processing or labeling and for video rotation.

  • Performs functions associated with the receipt and disbursal of funds including record keeping and preparing money for deposit.

  • Provides reader's advisory and reference services for patrons of all ages, utilizing print and electronic sources.

  • Promotes library services and materials.

  • Interacts with patrons to determine information needs (reference interview), including follow up.

  • Communicates and enforces library policies to patrons.

  • Registers patrons and collects fines and fees.

  • Responds to patron inquiries.

  • Assists patrons in the use of library resources and equipment, offering some computer assistance to the public.

  • As needed, works with other branches related to interlibrary loan coordination.

  • Operates equipment associated with the opening, operating, and closing of the branch including phones, computers, copier, fax machine and cash register.

  • Creates attractive and accurate booklists, flyers, displays, and signs.

  • Maintains neatness of public areas, including returning furniture to correct position, picking up library materials for eventual re-shelving and collecting other miscellaneous items.

  • Organizes and presents interesting and effective library tours, as needed.

  • Assumes responsibility for library during daily, short-term, or extended absences of the branch manager.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience and Skills

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree.

  • Minimum one (1) year of customer service experience.

  • Requires familiarity of Windows applications and the Internet.

  • Requires a general knowledge of children or young adult materials, resources, needs, and interests.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working with children and/or young adults preferred.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and Saturdays.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of Windows applications and the Internet, extensive customer service experience, and an excellent public service attitude.

  • General knowledge of library practices.

  • Knowledge of computer hardware and other technology associated with circulation of library materials and the ability to troubleshoot.

  • Knowledge and ability to follow library policies and procedures associated with the circulation of library materials.

  • Knowledge of and ability to use online information sources in reference situations.

  • Knowledge and ability to use nonfiction and print reference collection for reference inquiries.

  • Knowledge and ability to shelve materials by call number.

  • Knowledge of policies and procedures related to appropriate completion of forms and/or computer work and ability to perform such tasks.

  • Knowledge of policies and procedures and ability to accomplish tasks of the pick list and holds shelf maintenance.

  • Knowledge of policies and procedures and ability to accomplish tasks related to interlibrary loan coordination and maintenance in the branch.

  • Knowledge of library procedures associated with the opening, operating, and closing of the branch.

  • Knowledge of patrons' needs/interests and the local community.

  • Ability to plan programs.

  • Ability to conduct and evaluate programs including using a variety of techniques, resources and activities and recording statistics.

  • Ability to organize and maintain library materials.

  • Ability to budget, to maintain a calendar of programs, and to utilize outside presenters.

  • Ability to produce publicity for library programs, including use of applicable computer programs.

  • Ability to utilize applicable library computer hardware/software.

  • Ability to prepare attractive and accurate booklists, displays, flyers, and signs.

Physical Conditions & Additional Information

Ability to push book trucks, carts, and bins weighing up to 30 pounds; ability to lift 30 pounds; ability to be able to stand for extended periods, stoop, bend and carry.Contacts include supervisor, staff, and public.
