Job Summary

Under general supervision is responsible for the operation of a branch library, central library section/department, a technical services section or coordination of a system-wide library program. Working conditions are primarily in an office environment. Exercises direct supervision over assigned staff.

Work Location

Any one of the twenty-eight (28) branch library locations.

Work Hours

Work days and hours vary, Saturday - Friday work week; evenings and weekends required.

Essential Job Functions

  • Formulates goals, plans, and procedures for assigned area of responsibility.
  • Directs, coordinates, and schedules the activities of assigned area.
  • Directs the overall operation of the branch or section.
  • Supervises, trains, monitors, counsels, and evaluates the work of assigned staff.
  • Monitors and evaluates the work of assigned staff.
  • Monitors use and maintains quality of collection of library materials in the department or facility under Librarian III's supervision including recommending titles or subjects for purchase.
  • Reviews assigned media for books and other library materials for a branch or Central Library collection, and purchases selected materials.
  • Maintains work records and prepares reports.
  • Analyzes, evaluates, and selects materials.
  • Participates in library committee work.
  • Monitors and evaluates all services.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Library Science, Library and Information Studies/Science or Information Studies/Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited university.
  • Three (3) years' experience as a professional librarian.
  • One (1) year in a supervisory capacity.
  • No substitution for education allowed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supervising daily operations of a facility.
  • Experience serving as a direct supervisor to assigned staff.
  • Experience providing reference and reader's advisory instruction and assistance.
  • Experience working with stakeholders in the community.
  • Spanish language proficiency.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of book and media publishing industry trends, issues, and practices.
  • Knowledge of library theories, issues, practices, and trends.
  • Knowledge of all systems used in public libraries (AACR2, LC subject headings, Dewey decimal system, MARC formats and the OCLC bibliographic utility).
  • Skill in supervising, training, selecting, monitoring, counseling, and evaluating assigned staff.
  • Skill in operating a personal computer, PC applications, and electronic resources as used in libraries.
  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard and other basic office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to interpret library policies, objectives and services to community groups, educational leaders, publishing industry representatives, other City departments and the general public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to handle all physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
