The City of Norfolk's Department of Libraries is currently seeking a Library Associate II for its Jordan Newby Anchor Branch. This position performs customer service roles at the public service desks by answering and attending to customers' questions in person and over the phone. Engages in youth services activities with regular programs for the public, and outreach activities.
Departmental Hiring Salary: $41,775
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
Responsible for developing and implementing youth programming on a regular basis.
Works closely with NPL Marketing Departing for publicity of programs.
Prepares monthly statistics of programs attendees.
Supervises and schedules staff members of the children's library, and the entire staff, if required.
Manages the youth collection by selecting and ordering for appropriate age-group and weeding the collection as well.
Connects with community organizations, schools and daycares for outreach and partnership opportunities.
Supervises staff in other departments in absence of other supervising personnel of the branch.
Oversees and guides Youth services staff and volunteers when the need arises.
Provides customer service at the public service desk by assisting patrons with reference questions involving resources in print, the internet, databases, community information resources and readers advisory.
Receives deposits and posts money for daily cash report.
Performs circulation activities by checking materials in and out, reserving material requests, registering new patrons, coordinating Interlibrary loans and collecting fees.
Must be able to sit/stand for extended periods of time, lifts up to 25 pounds from ground to waist-level, bend, stoop, push, pull, and complete tasks requiring manual dexterity to retrieve books and other materials from shelves/cabinets ranging in height from floor level to approximately 6 feet, and unpack incoming books/orders.
Thorough knowledge of library resources, procedures, and systems.
Ability to use good judgement in daily services to analyze problems, recommend solutions and make decisions.
High degree of comfort learning new technologies.
Ability to relate library services to the needs of the community.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the public and other employees.
Participates in outreach partnerships, public relations activities, and community events.
Exhibits proficient knowledge of computer software and databases.
Develops ideas for brochures, pamphlets, booklets, and handouts for programs.
Demonstrates excellent organization & time management skills
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
Three years of experience in library, research or related services, including supervisory and/or management experience.
Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5000 sign on bonus.
