The purpose of this position is to manage the evening operation of the Library to include supervision of student assistants and to ensure proper closing procedures.

This position is expected to work 28 hours per week with the following schedule:

Academic year: Sunday

  • Thursday (7 pm

  • 12 am) and 3 additional flexible hours.

May Term, Summer and Intersession: Flexible Sunday

  • Friday daytime hours

Essential Job Duties

1.Assist patrons at the Circulation Desk in checking Library materials in and out; register new borrowers according to library policies; advise patrons of library and circulation polices; and provide requested reserve materials.

2.Serve as Building Supervisor and perform regular rounds of the library to monitor the safety and security of patrons, library collections, and the building. Report any problems that arise to the Director and secure the building at closing time.

3.Collect fines and ensure appropriate cash handling and security procedures are followed.

4.Supervise student assistants assigned to evening hours.

5.Assist patrons in the use of the online catalog, computers, printers, scanners, audio-visual equipment, and photocopy machines; report malfunctions of equipment.

6.Keep statistics on library use during evening hours.

7.Assist library faculty with technical services, including managing serials acquisitions, check-in, claiming, and statistics; processing materials for discard; removing records for discarded books in Koha and OCLC; and assisting with inventory of collections.

8.Participate in Library-wide projects and events and assist in preparation for information literacy sessions.

9.Maintain regular communication with the Director, Circulation Manager, and library faculty and perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to work independently and apply appropriate policies and procedures within the assigned area of responsibility. At times may have little or no supervision and may have to make crucial decisions regarding patron safety.

Ability to analyze what patrons require from the Circulation Department or to direct them to other departments as required

Proficiency in use of Internet

Knowledge of circulation policies and procedures

Ability to create word processing documents and use Outlook.

Ability to effectively supervise student assistants

Effective written and oral communication skills

Ability to diffuse difficult situations and resolve conflicts

Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate judgment in handling information and records

Ability to represent the Library and University in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner

The educational requirement for this position is: High school diploma; some college preferred.
